Owl's latest opinion piece in the Metro - WARNING Trans related

In an opinion piece in the Metro, on the Transgender DAy of Remembrance, Owl trots out all the misleading statistics

Transgender Trend are distributing a "factually inaccurate" document (HA! Angry) and there's no mention in the opinion piece that the 369 deaths are from across the globe, instead being reported as if all in the UK.

Infants under 1 are most likely to die at the hands of another, second are young people aged 16-24.

These are such misleading 'facts', I'm horrified that a newspaper is prepared to publish this rubbish without checking sources and the actual stats.

The ONS don't have statistics for 2018/2019 yet, but we all know it's been a bumper year for homicides this year. Sad

TerfAndSerf for non-trans murders, I take it. I'm only aware of one trans murder, that of Naomi Hersi. There have been so many stabbings this year, in London in particular, that it will be a bad year.

TerfAndSerf · 22/11/2018 22:23

Yes, sorry. All homicides in the UK.

Furthermore this statement "[t]his year a shocking figure of 369 trans people were reported murdered, and 28 of those were young people under the age of 20. Since 2008 there have been 2982 reported murders and 11% of those were young people under the age of 20" should be qualified informing readers that this is a worldwide statistic and does not refer to the UK.

Also this statement has been proven to be false "[i]n fact, a body of research shows alarmingly high suicide rates among trans youth — with up to 45% of trans youth in the UK having attempted suicide." the NHS Gender Identity Service has come out to say that this is an incorrect statistic (www.thetimes.co.uk/article/teen-transgender-drama-butterfly-inflates-suicide-risk-9ng3z22mv)
"However, Gids released figures showing that among the roughly 5,000 young patients referred to the service between 2016 and last August, there were three suicides and four attempted suicides — less than 1%.Gids says suicide among such patients is “extremely rare.” In a statement about the show, it told The Sunday Times: “Suicidality in young people attending the Gids is similar to that of young people referred to child and adolescent mental health services.“It is not helpful to suggest that suicidality is an inevitable part of this condition . . . It would be very unusual for younger children referred to the service to make suicidal attempts.”"

I hope that you will amend or remove the article in question."

Did you send that to the Metro, miri1985?

Headline talks about protecting the next generation

What next generation they want them all sterilized

Nice

miri1985 · 22/11/2018 22:32

I'm probably banging my head against a brick wall but I emailed but I think its too long to post in a single comment as it won't go through, the 2nd part is in a comment above but the first part was about the statement that puberty blockers are totally fine which has a hyper link to a study about prepubescent children none of which were on puberty blockers and makes no statement about the safety of puberty blockers, I included links to IQ and bone/joint studies and explained why they are not safe

Anyone else who wants to the Metro is part of IPSO

miri1985 · 22/11/2018 22:39

I think its too many hyperlinks for a post which is why it won't publish here but in case anyone is interested I took a screenshot of what I sent. Doubt it'll make any difference but it makes me feel like I've done something

Didn't Owl lose a court case a few weeks ago relating to their shoddy journalism?!? I can't believe they're still getting work!

arranfan · 22/11/2018 22:55

Out of court settlement to FPFW in re Owl's piece in Independent:

BlackForestCake · 22/11/2018 23:00

Shoddy journalism is the Metro's stock in trade, so he/she/they/whatever Owl is should fit right in. The Metro is basically "What Happened On Twitter Yesterday".

PencilsInSpace · 22/11/2018 23:06

Didn't Owl lose a court case a few weeks ago relating to their shoddy journalism?!?

The Independent settled out of court for defaming FPFW by publishing Owl's article.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 22/11/2018 23:23

As Owl quotes Stonewall, even though this piece is garbage, I don't think anyone could sue for this.

Could Metro be be made to publish a rebuttal of the 'facts'?

miri1985 · 23/11/2018 13:02

Got an email back to say they're "investigating".

Theres a correction been made to the article this morning, maybe because of my email, the hyperlink referenced in the quote that puberty blockers are "are entirely safe for children to take, showing no negative long-term effects" has now been changed to link to this NHS page (gids.nhs.uk/puberty-and-physical-intervention) which again says no such thing and doesn't reference any studies or state that there will no long term effects it actually states "we don’t know the full psychological effects of the blocker or whether it alters the course of adolescent brain development." so I don't know what the point in that correction was

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 23/11/2018 16:42

Well done. That's some sort of result at least.

uglyandlovingit · 23/11/2018 16:46

Excellent! I hope they'll think twice before printing Owl's rubbish next time!

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 24/11/2018 23:37
