Edward Lord tweeted yesterday about headline results from the Corporation of London 'gender survey'. Sounds like terrible news.
I wonder if there are grounds to object on the basis of how directive the survey was and also I didn't realise it was called the 'gender survey'.

Ugh. That’s not what they said in committee last month.

rightreckoner · 21/10/2018 08:05

What happened in committee ?

Charliethefeminist · 21/10/2018 08:12

Definitely not. There was a thread on it. Said there would be some delay while results were analysed? Edward Lord makes my skin crawl. The idea of him deciding where my private boundaries lie, is revolting.

SwearyG · 21/10/2018 08:13

They reported a very different position in their minutes. Thread about it here

I was hoping for a week off with the consultation closing but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

BamBoooooo · 21/10/2018 08:14

Interesting use of the word 'published' - there's nothing on their website.

I suspect that this stat is very selective. Yes, a high percentage of people of people support trans people's rights in many circs. Just not when we're changing/ peeing/ swimming.

Remember consultations aren't votes - it's not just about the numbers.

Im actually reassured by how vocal Edward Lord is - it shows that a lot of impetus for this come from him personally, not CoLC in general. What we need to do (and I hope, have done), is to get others to think this isn't just a nice progressive issue they can wave through.

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2018 08:17

Spin.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2018 08:18

I can't remember what the questions were?

If one of them was along the lines of "do you think trans people should be included in society" I can believe that stat.

Zeugma · 21/10/2018 08:20

'Between 81-65%' 'support' for trans inclusion? That's an inventive way of couching something. What does 'support' mean? Putting the higher figure first is odd. And there's a rather hefty difference between 65% and 81%.

Blurring the figures? Noooooo, surely not

OrchidInTheSun · 21/10/2018 08:20

Between 81-65%? That doesn't even make any sense

deepwatersolo · 21/10/2018 08:20

Didn‘t lord say in this 8th September meeting of TRAs ( there is an active thread on here) how he planned to cherry pick responses?

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2018 08:21

It's spin.

It's dishonest.

hellandhairnets · 21/10/2018 08:23

In that We're Still Here meeting, Lord said they were going to cherrypick results, didn't he?

So...

hellandhairnets · 21/10/2018 08:23

deepwatersolo Great minds!

merrymouse · 21/10/2018 08:24

I agree with Zeugma.

Also, remember that the questions were very, very leading and participants were self selecting.

merrymouse · 21/10/2018 08:26

Yes itsallgoing, that was the kind of question asked.

MsMcWoodle · 21/10/2018 08:27

So surprised

SwearyG · 21/10/2018 08:29

The linked document from his tweet is here

It’s putting the analysis out to tender and full analysis of responses will be presented to the CoL by the end of the year.

The 81-65% agreement is with this statement:

a person may come to feel that their gender is different from that assigned to them at birth

Which if you ignore the gender assigned at birth bit many GC people will agree with. I think lots of people may feel lots of things, but that doesn’t mean they are a) right or b) we should legislate or create policies based on those feelings.

I suspect those saying it’s spin are right.

MsMcWoodle · 21/10/2018 08:31

This is from TheHarpySings coverage of the 'We're still here' conference:
"Edward Lord agreed. He also said that the City of London Corp city solicitor and the Chief Exec are “strong allies”.

Regards the consultation doc put out by the City of London Corp… Lord implied that they were going to go through the answers and cherry pick the the qualitative snapshots.

One of the Mermaids mums in attendance said the “banner of concerned mothers of vulnerable children shouldn’t be captured by bigots”. Lord is meeting officers about how data is presented and is “conscious of that line of argument”"

merrymouse · 21/10/2018 08:33

You can put anything after “a person may come to feel” and it will be a true statement.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 21/10/2018 08:43

Would an FoI request to make him release the true results be useful here?

I support trans inclusion. That isn’t the same as agreeing that TWAW or that trans people are being excluded because some services and facilities are segregated according to sex.

I’m excluded if there isn’t any provision of toilets for women in a building, not if nobody will let me identify as disabled and use the disabled loo.

OldCrone · 21/10/2018 09:08

If they stopped conflating sex and gender the discussions and consultations would make more sense.

Do I recognise that trans people exist and should have the same human rights as everyone else? Yes.

Do I think that men should be free to choose to be legally female and access all female-only spaces? No.

Ereshkigal · 21/10/2018 09:56

Also, I wonder what the proportions were like for people who actually work or live in the City.

Ereshkigal · 21/10/2018 10:06

It gives a link to Appendix 1 for demographic data but I couldn't make that link work.
