Thursday’s TIMES: “Autistic woman ‘pimped out’ in care scandal” #bbcpapers #tomorrowspaperstoday

This is copy of some of the article if you can't read it from the image:

Austistic Woman ‘pimped out’ in Care Scandal.

A young autistic woman was allow to have sex with numerous men because her carers were said to believe that high-risk encounters with strangers might help her to “learn from her mistakes”, it can be revealed today.

The woman 23, who has severe learning disabilities and an IQ of 52 was repeatedly exploited during a court approved, two month trial period this summer in which random men were permitted to visit her Manchester care home between 10am and 4pm each day.

She was also taken to shisha bars and had sex in public on numerous occasions, including in a taxi and at the back of a bowling alley because the care company paid to look after her would not physically intervene. In August carers reported that the woman was “offering her telephone number to any number of Asian males” with whom she came into contact. She “doesn’t always recognise them when they arrive at the door and they sometimes don’t recognise here”.

The sexual activity was brought to an end after two months. Last month, in a report to the court, a psychiatrist warned that allowing her to continue to be exposed to such a “high level of risk” was unacceptable, unprofessional and might lead to “sexual abuse, violence, injury or death”.

I note might be despite what had already happened.

The article then goes on to mention that the woman concerned has been under the Court of Protection whose role it is to safeguard vulnerable adults who lack the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves since she was 18.

And the court report said, she might lead to, as in future tense, sexual abuse.

It’s heartbreaking and I equate those men with paedophiles, as they are abusing a woman with the understanding of a child.

RedToothBrush · 17/10/2018 23:17

Many many WTAFs going on twitter in response to this.

OP posts:
Fallingirl · 17/10/2018 23:19

Holy crap. It was unacceptable to allow her to “continue” to be exposed to such a risk.

Someone, or several someones, made the decision to start this abuse, and no-one stopped them. Beggars belief.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 17/10/2018 23:19

might help her to “learn from her mistakes”

I'm speechless

doublethink · 17/10/2018 23:20

Oh god, no Sad

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 17/10/2018 23:21

This is utterly revolting. I'm lost for words. Angry

ToeToToe · 17/10/2018 23:22

Oh my god. Sad Angry

SAFEGUARDING.

Serfisafleur · 17/10/2018 23:22

Just. .. WTFWTFWTFWTF

littlbrowndog · 17/10/2018 23:24

Totally disgusting
That poor woman

64BooLane · 17/10/2018 23:26

How - what the - I don’t even understand.

It sounds like something from dystopian fiction. I feel like I must be missing something.

POPholditdown · 17/10/2018 23:30

How could this be court approved??

Are children going to be subjected to a similar trial, in order to teach them stranger danger?

The entire thing is awful and shocking, but, unless I’ve misunderstood, ‘court approved’ threw me the most.

heresyandwitchcraft · 17/10/2018 23:35

This is just too fucking upsetting.
That poor woman.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/10/2018 23:37

oh poor love.

WellThisIsShit · 17/10/2018 23:43

I can well imagine it happening, and have more trouble imagining how it would stop happening, given the standard of ‘care’ I’ve been exposed to from adult social care approved carers.

The two absolute worst periods of my life have been when I’ve been forced to endure adult agency care. And this is as a mentally switched on, able to protect myself (in theory anyway!) adult, who just happens to have become seriously physically disabled.

I cannot imagine how horrendous it would be for someone who cannot constantly fight against the system and advocate for themselves whilst existing with no way out of the incompetence, abuse, inhumanity and cruelty that are built in to daily life.

It makes me feel sick.

RedToothBrush · 17/10/2018 23:47

Some more:

Under a court approved care plan the council employed a specialist company, Engage Support to provide her with 24 hour support. At home, a carer was always with her; in the community, she was accompanied by two care workers.

Twelve months ago the woman is said to have embarked on a series of increasingly risky attempts to engage sexually with men she barely knew. She sent dozens of "nude photographs of herself" to a man who worked in a shisha bar. Other new "boyfriends" included a tax driver whom she was "facetiming naked, as he had asked her to do this".

When the woman began to seek sex in public, Engage Support is said to have threatened to terminate its care contract with Manchester council unless restrictions on her freedom were reduced.

According to court documents, the local authority told the court that a psychologist employed by the company believed that giving her "unsupervised contact with men" was in her best interests. A safety net would mean that she could contact her carers by phone if necessary. The council opposed the plan, arguing that to withdraw support in the community would "inevitably expose her to a very significant risk of sexual harm, violence, abuse and trafficking".

In June, however, Judge Jonathan....

And I can't read any more, but I get thats the bit where the court approves the care plan.

When I think nothing will surprise me anymore..

At least I can say well done to the Times for exposing this.

LassWiADelicateAir · 17/10/2018 23:59

Yes , like everyone else I can't make head nor tail of this.

And yet again it is The Times which is investigating and reporting.

Iflyaway · 18/10/2018 00:00

This just beggars belief....

"Learn from her mistakes"??

With an IQ of 54?

Court-approved...?

I feel I am in a parallel universe.

Weetabixandshreddies · 18/10/2018 00:03

Who on earth allowed this to happen?

What sort of people are making decisions like these?

Why is the case before the court now? Are some of the men on trial or is to do with the care of the woman?

I just can't believe that educated, professional people can make decisions like this.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 18/10/2018 00:09

It's tricky.

If the lady in the article is deemed to have capacity to give consent then carers cannot always intervene. She has 'the right' to a sex life.

Im in a similar position with my dd. On paper she can give consent, mentally I don't think she'd be able to cope. But she's also 20. I couldnt physically intervene to stop her having sex.

Same with her ipad. It causes huge issues as she can't cope with having it. I want to just take it away. But that goes against her human rights, even tho the benefits would be huge. If someone is deemed to have the capacity to make their own decisions carers can't always step in.

It's wrong. But that's how it is.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 00:12

If someone is deemed to have the capacity to make their own decisions carers can't always step in.

She was deemed NOT to have capacity. The court order she was under seems to have stated this explicitly.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2018 00:18

Utter bastards,
both those men who raped a totally vulnerable woman and those - social workers, a bloody COURT ffs ? -who were legally responsible for her welfare

Is it rape - a criminal offence - to have sex with someone unable to give proper consent due to LDs / v low IQ ?
If not, it damn well should be - it would be if the woman had been too drunk to consent
If it is, have these men been charged ?

I can't read any of the article (visually handicapped)
Can the judge responsible be sacked ?
With such dreadful judgement, they should never judge another case of any kind
Ditto any social workers who agreed

imo, should be criminal charges, as a "Misconduct in Public Office" offence

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 00:22

If you can't consent, its rape. Legally she was deemed incapable of consenting.

And the carers were allowing visitors into where she was living and knew what was happening. And they never said anything to the men concerned? It was about stopping her? No police? Never once said she is legally unable to consent, and if you do this it's rape. Not once.

That's what makes it utterly horrific.
