Just finished reading the last thread (having come over from skinny Spanish woman one). Drastically reduced carbs last year and lost three stone (Holford diet - you do still have some carbs with it though) but fell off wagon in September when DS2 had heart surgery and stopped exercising.

So today is day two of new carb-free regime. Can I join in? (vv belatedly)

Highly recommend tonight's supper - bash chicken breast, layer of veg (I used artichoke but also vg with mushrooms/spinach/rocket/herbs) then layer of ham, cream cheese, roll up in oiled foil and bake. Mmm. Had with Greek yog, garlic, cucumber sauce and garlicy French beans...bit too much garlic so good thing DH out...

Also a question - what's IPD (seen it before a few of the recipes) - thanks!

Hello.

I've spent this evening reading old low carb threads so I'm raring Smile

I have a stone to loose & it's all around my tummy, thighs & bum so some exercise is going to be needed but I am a pennyless toddler walker so no chance for speed walking just yet - what else can I do? Run up & down the stairs??

Hope your DS is getting back on track, DD3 had her consultation yesterday & the cardiac team confirmed her vsd has now started to repair itself which is such a relief.

Your dinner sounds lovely btw

Thanks sal and bohica - he's doing really well now - had second op last month as bones didn't heal quite right but fingers crossed all good now (bohica - was a vsd too - great news your dds is repairing :-) )

Oh and you can also poach the chicken if in rush and no time to preheat oven etc. And is v good next day.

Bohica - try circuit training type stuff in intervals at home - don't even need trainers - do each exercise for a minute, then quick break when you shift into next position; chose one cardio eg star jumps/burpees; then one for legs/thighs eg squats/lunges; then arms and core eg press ups then tum eg sit ups/reverse curl. Repeat three times then have break. Do three sets in total (ideally changing/progressing the leg/tum etc with next set. Takes a out twenty minutes but really makes a difference. Hope that all made sense...

(am assuming running not poss as toddler in tow but personally am v inspired by sal's couch to five k thing and going to give it a try!)

Thanks sarra I have 3 very energetic little girls inc a toddler so I have decided to drag my bum off the park bench & join in.
They all do gymnastics so I am going to get them all involved in some squats & jumps!! Smile

I feel bad when I speak to other mums that have had to go through similar to DD's diagnosis, I'm so sorry your DS has had to have surgery, it was a make or break appointment for us yeaterday as surgery had been mentioned as DD was having trouble breathing - she has been diagnosed with asthma which is nothing compared to what you are going through (un mn hug)

Can someone explain ketosis to me (good or bad?)

Hello new low-carbers, hello oldies, thanks Orm for the lovely new thread.

Recipe looks tasty, Sarra - I'm going to do BIWI's pizza chicken this week, which features similarly bashed chicken breasts topped with "stuff". The IPD you see referred to is "Idiot Proof Diet" - it's basically the India & Neris book, which loads of us latched onto recently cos it was free with Cosmo.

Nothing fancy came out of my kitchen tonight; I must confess it was ready-meals-a-go-go this evening, as I was suffering from a severe bout of lazyitis.

Arghhhhh am at a conference and didn't manage to have breakfast. So ended up eating 4 mini lemon curd doughnuts for breakfast. This day has not started well. Hoping lunch is better.

Ta for the new thread. Hopefully it will help me refund my resolve (which was supposed to arrive yesterday but seems to have been delayed).

No booze last night. So I am at least feeling vaguely human.

Thanks for the new thread. Resolve still strong here - DH noticed I had lost weight when he walked into the kitchen this morning, which is nice.

Kippers and a scrambled egg (fresh the hen) for brekky.

Ooh, lemon curd doughnuts - nom nom

Breakfast Greek yog with flaked almonds and ground flax.

Just cooking lunch now - chicken marinaded in Harissa and wilted spinach with lots of lemon juice with more of the garlicky cucumber yog on side.

Btw what are you lot using as tortilla substitutes? Seen several refs to Mexican stuff - is it egg crepes?

Trying not to think of the lemon curd donuts...

Ps well done sal!!!

Bohica - know exactly what you mean. Felt so grateful when talking to all the transplant mums in hospital to have caught ours early but also guilty - was awful what they were going through (DS would've needed lung transplant by age 5 otherwise, and we only found the vsd by accident so it could easily have been worse - terrifying)

Running in the rain is fun sal! As long as you've got good lightweight shoes that don't soak up all the water and weight at ton

Just looked up grapefruit carb count and is slightly more than a pitta bread - eek - one is sitting balefully in fruit bowl as DH attempt to help diet - had planned to eat for breakfast, but perhaps not...

Had thought most of the carb things would be fairly obvious but...it isn't even sweet! Are
There any other sneaky offenders to watch out for? (the previous diet I did some carbs incl fruit were allowed so long as low GI/GL which grapefruit is..)

Sorry sara, most fruit is out Sad It's packed full of sugar even grapefruit! If you really want to eat some fruit for breakfast, berries are your best bet (straws, black/red currants etc) with Greek yogurt. But even then it shouldn't be a staple.

You need to rethink the way you see food. Aim for protein and fat as the mainstay and green leafy veg and salad as the only carbs. At least to start with.

I don't mind running in the rain, except when I go past a massive roadside puddle and some sadistic idiot motorist swerves and gives me a soaking. But Sal - it's good sign that you feel that you are missing running whenever you can't get out. I had a nostalgic browse through the Couch to 5K thread the other day - it brought it all back! I even went out at 5am one morning last summer, because DH was off on an early business trip, and I couldn't bear to miss a run (keeno). It's not quite the same now, as I crawl out of bed at the last possible moment.......

Anyway, lunch al-desco again - just had a tasty salad - baby spinach leaves topped with salami chunks and brie.

Regarding tortillas, I know you can buy low-carb ones (custy's the expert), but I'd rather use some form of lettuce leaf as a substitute. I like the crunch.
