Up to 250mm of rain expected today into tomorrow. This will lead to severe and dangerous flooding. Take heed if you are in the area.

I'm going to bump this up. I'm aware that it is half term for many and people will be caught out.

and bump.

Thank you @OhYouBadBadKitten - I've got friends near Cartmel and am hoping they will be ok.

MrsAvocet · 27/10/2021 18:30

It is quite bad at the moment, and I'm not normally prone to worrying about the weather. Quite a lot of roads are closed or just about "passable with care" already in our area.
We live quite high up and well above our nearest river so I'm not worried, though I bet we will lose power soon. There has been a lot done on flood defences round here recently, since the severe floods we had in 2009 and 2015 so hopefully they will hold, but it is definitely a night to stay at home and batten down the hatches unless you really have to go out. Take care everyone.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2021 18:31

I hope it will be ok. the BBC are saying western and southern areas look to be most badly hit. Rail services have been suspended by Avanti.

Yes, we are in one of the areas that is forecast to be worst affected and it is certainly not nice at present. I usually take these Met Office warnings with a pinch of salt as they often seem to put them out for what is just normal winter weather really, but I think this one is justified. My son just went out to check the chickens are all in (as if they wouldn't be - they're not stupid!) and he could hardly open the front door against the wind.
I'm extra stressed though as my husband has been taken into hospital today. Normally bad weather doesn't get to me, but I've started imagining all sorts of potential disasters just now!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2021 18:55

I'm sorry MrsA, the weather is an extra stress you could do without.

I’m in the North Lakes and the village road is flooded. Passable, but slowly. Still raining…

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/10/2021 08:48

How are you both doing? I see that Honister Pass had over 300mm in 24 hours.

Still pretty wild here. I haven't been out but my Facebook newsfeed is full of people saying quite a few local roads are flooded or blocked by fallen trees etc. I haven't slept much with one thing and another.
Feel sorry for anyone on holiday, it will be awful for anyone staying in a caravan or glamping pod etc.

actiongirl1978 · 28/10/2021 09:08

We are in windermere on a posh campsite (in a self catering house!) and the rain has stopped now. But yesterday was absolutely incredible I've never seen so much rain. We drove out for lunch to a pub and it took double the amount of time as the roads were basically Rivers. We live in the country so are used to country lanes but not ones with torrents down the middle 😁

Latest from the Environment Agency/Met office.

How is your dh MrsA?

Wouldn't be good for tents actiongirl! There is a lot more rain to come today I'm afraid.

mnahmnah · 28/10/2021 09:52

Had a slight break in the rain earlier but terrible now. The road must be flooded. Might see later. I’m just visiting my mum for half term and have to drive home at some point!

mnahmnah · 28/10/2021 09:53

And anyone trying to go over Honister in this must be crazy!

Bringonthepjs · 28/10/2021 09:56

Looks dreadful today and onwards

MrsAvocet · 28/10/2021 10:54

He is feeling a bit better this morning thanks OhYouBadKitten but still very poorly (Covid complications) I'm not allowed to visit which is a worry and a relief at the same time as the roads are pretty bad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/10/2021 11:10

Flowers MrsA I hope he becomes properly better soon.

I do wonder how many visitors and holidaymakers have been caught out. I think it's hard to appreciate the scale and impact of such a large and continued downfall of rain can have.

And the rain goes on.

All the shops are boarding up and sandbagging. The newsagents had the local MP on the phone when I went in, checking how they were. The river is incredibly high. Really hope the Main Street doesn’t flood again.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/10/2021 17:13

The River Kent looks about ready to burst banks! Couple of road accidents and a lorry fire adding to the chaos of the flooding. I feel sorry for anyone who came up for half term, but then there'd be no lakes if there was no rain!

Bobbobbobbing · 28/10/2021 17:23

Dparents are in N Cumbria. They said it has been torrential rain. The beck has burst its bank, separating the neighbouring villages but it isn't anywhere near the houses yet.

MrsAvocet · 28/10/2021 17:29

It has eased off a bit here, though I think it is a temporary hiatus. Forecast suggests it will start again soon. Lots of roads closed. The Tesco delivery man who brought my shopping earlier said there are some houses they can't get to.
I hope the fact that we've had such an unusually dry Summer and the water table and lake levels are low for the time of year might mean it clears relatively quickly once it stops. Fingers crossed. We've got friends in our nearest town who live near the river and have been flooded 3 times in the last decade.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/10/2021 18:29

I think the low rainfall through the summer is what is protecting the area from more serious flooding.

OP posts:
MrsAvocet · 28/10/2021 18:43

Yes I think you are right. I was in the Thirlmere area a couple of weeks ago and was amazed how low the water level was - it looked like it was the middle of a dry summer, not October. If the lakes had already been full I hate to think what it would be like, but it's been bizarrely dry for much of the year.
