Hurrah! It's that time of year when two amateurs update with the latest forecasts for snow potential.

Please don't use this for any planning that matters, especially not this far out in advance when it's in fantasy forecast land.

At the moment the only model I can see that goes out that far is the experimental CFS model, which sadly is looking mild and unsettled.

But tomorrow is another day.

Keeping snowy fingers crossed...

CFS shows a high pressure influence over Europe and the SE on Christmas day so coldest there, in the NW milder with mild air pushing across. No snow showing though at this point.

I'll get more specific as we get closer Xmas Grin

Watching hopefully. I'm not bothered if it snows at Christmas but would love to wake up to cold, hard frost. Anything but mild and wet!

HandsOffMyRights · 03/12/2019 08:12

Your threads on snow/ice watch are always invaluable in the winter when I need to plan work and school runs.

Yay, love this thread. Xmas Smile

Unfortunately CFS is still showing mild for Christmas.

Oooh next week looks good but it needs saving for Christmas! Alexa says that we are due a white Christmas as not had one since 2010. I'm always hopeful. I wouldn't mind cold and frosty then sunny but rain and wind would be awful. It will be windy enough once I've had a plate of veg and stuffing balls Grin

Christmas Eve/Day now on GFS so thought I'd give this a gentle 'bump' (hope I've got some of this right!)

23rd December - Dry for the south (temps 7-10C) Chilly in Scotland (6-7C) Maybe snow over the Scottish hills.

Christmas Eve - Dry and bright for most of the country but chilly - 5-7C. Snow for Scottish hills.

Christmas Day - Similar to Christmas Eve. Perhaps chance of snow over high parts of England as well as Scottish hills.

Boxing Day - Really cold with temperatures 2-3C for most of England/perhaps below freezing for some places. Temperatures well below freezing for Scottish hills.

27th December (up 'til 6am) Frost overnight. More snow overnight for Scottish hills.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2019 13:42

That looks pretty good :) I've just updated the current snow watch thread.

Looking at GEFS ensembles the operational run is at the cold side of the cluster around Christmas but nothing looks especially mild.

CFS wants to go for milder instead, but its experimental so we will ignore that Xmas Grin

sorry for the lack of input. Been stretching myself a bit far, Plus it's rather uninspiring!

Of course things will change but at the moment

Christmas Eve - cold over Scottish mountains, with some rain and snow. Mostly dry over England and Wales apart from some showers. Temps, top end of single digits.

Christmas Day - similar, but a little cooler, rain threatens south east and Wales.

Boxing day - :( awful. Very wet and windy. GFS in particular has gone over board with a really deep low filling as it crosses.

I'll update tomorrow :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/12/2019 08:05

Christmas eve - relatively dry and cool, some rain and snow moving in from the west in Scotland.

Christmas day - some showers in the west, starting off quite cold, with perhaps a little frost then cool (single digit temps)

Boxing day - rain moving in from the west. Less grim than yesterday's model runs though.

We do have a lot of rain, especially in the south to come over the next few nights. I'd expect more flooding by the end of Thursday, so keep an eye on roads for Friday, with some potential for minor roads to be flooded again in places.

Thanks for doing this you lovely twoXmas Grin we do appreciate it.
I like the idea of cold after Christmas. I'd given up hoping for snow after all this squelchy weather.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/12/2019 22:36

The SE corner really is a concern over the next few days, with 80mm plus by the end of Saturday.

You are welcome Hoochy :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/12/2019 08:00

We have so much rain to come over the next few days I'm afraid. Plenty of flooding, especially in the SE.

Friday evenings get away should be in the main dry, apart from parts of the SE and here and there....

This mornings GFS run show plenty of rain for Christmas eve in the northern half of the UK. It also shows rain crossing on Christmas day and Boxing day.

There will be quieter interludes, but overall the picture is grim. Very wet and windy at times.

Xmas Sad
