My thoughts are with anyone with relatives in the path of Yasi. It looks truely bad :(

I currently have abc on listening to residents talk about their preps.

I have some good friends who live a few miles north of Cairns. They have battened down the hatches, got the beers in and are waiting. I do love the Aussie spirit! They are very nervous though and they are used to cyclones hitting every now and then. I will be watching the news today for updates....

My sister and her family live in Cairns. She has managed to evacuate to Brisbane but is obviously still worried about her house. I was there in 2006 when Larry came, it was petrifying but wasn't a direct hit on Cairns, this is going to be a lot worse :(

I hope that your friends nikki and your sister Bideyin come out of this ok. You are right this going to be a lot worse. Some speculation that gusts may reach 200mph with a devastating storm surge. I really really hope and pray that it doesn't reach those sorts of levels which are catastrophic.

Thank you so much OYBBK - my sister in Townsville, has "packed her brown trousers"...she's usually pretty phlegmatic so her fear is catching!

Just seen the news (BBC) about this. As if the recent flooding wasn't a hard enough hit on the area Sad

melezka, I hope your sister fares well out of this. How much is she staying in contact with you?
If you are the sort of person who finds media coverage helpful then abc news have enabled international live streaming today, so you can keep up with conditions.

I hope they will be ok too. They tried to get out but the flights were all full then the airport closed. Evacuation centres are all full. They have young kiddies too :(

Last I heard 2 hours ago they said the wind was picking up and the power was flickering so I guess we won't hear from them now until they get power back - hopefully tomorrow.

Melezka - thinking of your sister. We lived in T/ville for a year (inc Larry) - hope it comes to pass quietly.

It does rather put our snowtastrophe into perspective, doesn't it? I hope your DSis and family are OK Nikki.

Sorry I meant melezka, and your friends nikki. Confused

it does put our snowtrastophe into perspective. Scotland has the possibility of severe gales tomorrow and friday and yet its like comparing apples and oranges. Its such an oder of magnitude of difference that we cant really imagine it.

Yes, it is rather breezy here today, but not exactly 200mph.

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12343256\my goodness} when you think of the size of Australia - that is one huge storm Sad

Aww thank you OYBBK. It's wet and windy todayin Strathclyde, but that's not anything out of the ordinary here. Everyone in Sainsbury's was muttering darkly about snow this morning.

why do they put tape on the windows I'm guessing it's something to do with stopping the way they break if they do??

That's an astonishing image Baroque. Blimey.

Yes I think so. They used to do it in the war didn't they? I think it stops the glass from flying around if it shatters. Though I don't imagine eventhe mighty Sellotape could withstand a 200mph wind.

I have no idea Baroque - perhaps its something to do? I'd have thought that nailing on hardboard would be more effective.

Yes midnight, at least when I first came over I was coached to say "sticky tape" most carefully.

We won't hear now till the clean up.

Think the "sticky tape" has something to do with the way the shattered glass behaves - or something. My enduring memories of cyclones mainly consist of sheets of hardboard flying around looking like paper until they landed on something - I'm not sure anything is safe :(

Sounds like the worst will slide just south of Cairns.
