Overground/underground zone confusion

Im sure for anyone living in London this is an obvious question, bùt i am totally confused and dont want to book to stay nearby if my assumptions are wrong.
Thinking of staying in south london nearest station would be wandsworth town. Its listed as a network rail (so i assume overground) station in zone 2. As it is zone 2 does that mean the daily travel cap of £7 applies andi dont hae to pay for under 11's?? I tried to ask National Rail who took 15 mins and many pauses to tell me i would need a £13 travelcard for myself ad travel cards for my children at £6 per child? That seems extortionate...anyone know for sure?

For you, it depends what zones you are travelling in, i.e. starting in zone 2, ending where? It's free for under 11 child travelling with you.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 18/09/2021 17:37

depends where you are going, and at what time of day

CelestialGalaxy · 19/09/2021 09:39

Oops thought i had already replied. Thanks for your replies. We will be travelling in zones 1 and 2 on a saturday with children under 11.

I think the daily cap is £7.50? Kids travel for free

Clymene · 22/09/2021 21:31

The daily cap/free kids fares apply to over and underground stations.

CelestialGalaxy · 23/09/2021 07:27

Thanks all...you are officially better than Network Rails customer services x

If you are using national rail services (southern/southeaster/Thameslink etc) only under 5s are free to travel. I think it's only £1 for those travelling with an adult, but it's a while since mine were that age. Travel in all TfL transport is free for under 11s - so underground, bus, tram, DLR etc

LakeShoreD · 23/09/2021 07:41

Wandsworth Town is served by South Western so kids over 5 years old will need to buy a child ticket. On the tube, overground and buses under 11s are free but they’re not on the mainline bit.

Under 11 travel free
So you have to go to where the pushchairs goes through and a member of staff will keep it open for you and children to pass through

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 23/09/2021 07:45

Does anyone else now have the Wombles stuck in their head?

Only on TfL transport. National rail only under 5s are free. Wandsworth Town is national rail
Deannaamy · 23/09/2021 07:46

Children under 11 travel free with you on the London Underground, Overground (orange line) and Buses. National Rail trains have different rules and from Wandsworth Town you'd have to pay for your childs travel. On the tfl website under child fares there is a map that shows you which National rail trains are free to under 11s

You'd be better off starting off your journey at Clapham Junction or Putney Bridge

Theblackdogagain · 23/09/2021 07:46

Do you mean overground (light orange line) or proper train? Proper trains are not always covered by TFL. However the one from Amersham to Marylebone is and its super quick.

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity

They lived in Wimbledon Common not Wandsworth Common
Saladovercrispsanyday · 23/09/2021 07:48

National rail

£1 for under 16 travelling with an adult

Saladovercrispsanyday · 23/09/2021 07:49

And that’s for a single or a return!!

Saladovercrispsanyday · 23/09/2021 07:49

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity

Does anyone else now have the Wombles stuck in their head?
No because this is Wandsworth not Wimbledon!
VirgilStarkwell · 23/09/2021 07:50

My first thought was are you wombling free?

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 23/09/2021 07:51

It's not the common! It's the underground/overground thing.

I know I'm not the only one.

It was underground/overground in wombles song but I definitely have it in my head now too (it’s those words not the common referenced which brings it up!).

Great minds, buffy!!!

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 23/09/2021 07:53

I bet they were on Wandsworth common too anyway, picking up the naice litter.

GreatPotato · 23/09/2021 07:54

Don't children under 11 need an oyster to get free travel though? Often catches tourists out.
