Overground/underground zone confusion

43 replies

CelestialGalaxy · 18/09/2021 15:16

Im sure for anyone living in London this is an obvious question, bùt i am totally confused and dont want to book to stay nearby if my assumptions are wrong.
Thinking of staying in south london nearest station would be wandsworth town. Its listed as a network rail (so i assume overground) station in zone 2. As it is zone 2 does that mean the daily travel cap of £7 applies andi dont hae to pay for under 11's?? I tried to ask National Rail who took 15 mins and many pauses to tell me i would need a £13 travelcard for myself ad travel cards for my children at £6 per child? That seems extortionate...anyone know for sure?

@GreatPotato

Don't children under 11 need an oyster to get free travel though? Often catches tourists out.
I have never ever needed this Travel 2x a month to London with two

No. I just used the pushchairs gates and shoved my children through through in front of me

Children aged 5-10 need an oyster to get free travel on most national rail services within London zones.

However ime of living in London and using south western regularly, they never ask about any children obviously under 11, just go through the large barriers.

All children under 11 get free travel on TFL services.

Sorry I got confused between Wandsworth Road and Wandsworth Town. You will need a zip photo card to travel free from Wandsworth town.

Alternatively just hop on a bus to East Putney or Clapham Junction

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity I sent that picture to my friend, who's a Londoner. He didn't get it. I was HmmHmm

Overground refers to a specific (small) number of above ground services run by TFL. They usually have a orange line on the map. They run round the edges of London and don't as far as I k ow go to any main terminals. This is separate to national rail which runs the majority of above ground services.

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity

Does anyone else now have the Wombles stuck in their head?
Yes me, and nothing to do with Commons Grin

Dadada dadada wombling free….

Toddlerteaplease · 23/09/2021 08:10

And yes it was my first thought as well.

Clymene · 23/09/2021 08:13

Basically, anything dotted in this map you're supposed to have a kids oyster for

tfl.gov.uk/maps/track?intcmp=40400

But like @BuffyFairy says, no one is likely to check or care particularly

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/09/2021 08:16

Morning Factoid... 55% of the Underground is actually Overground...

Ifailed · 23/09/2021 08:23

Euston and Liverpool St both have TfL Overground services.

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity

It's not the common! It's the underground/overground thing.

I know I'm not the only one.

You aren't! I thought that too and now have an earworm.

Reading the thread backwards, thought for moment this was referring to wombles.

Only if travelling without an adult I think. DS needed one when he started using the bus to school in Y6

HE IS TO BE CAST BEYOND THE M25 IMMEDIATELY.

No appeal.

ChicChaos · 23/09/2021 09:53

Just to add to the confusion, we did get an Oyster card for DD the last time we were in London, it was pre-COVID so she was probably still free on the Underground. She liked tapping it to get in and out of the stations Grin You can buy tourist Oysters in advance but as I hadn't, a very helpful Tube worker sorted it out for us at the station.

Yes, the Wombles theme tune starts with 'underground, overground, Wombling free' so the thread title also made me think of it - thanks for the earworm!

I think the main terminals are largely Womble-free, tbh Grin
