Christmas night out outfit - need to look smokin hot

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 14/12/2014 23:13

I'm meeting some very beautiful, skinny, fashionable people next Saturday and I need to look effortlessly glamorous and, as mentioned, smokin hot. I originally bought dress in Coast, but I feel a bit blah in it now, which isn't improved by knowing the very gorgeous women who will be there will be wearing similar style. So I got a notion to wear a pair of beautiful cream trousers. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a top to do them justice (pic of best I can find is attached, I'd like it for work, but it feels a bit mumsy for my night out). My alternative is the shorts and sparkly top combo - are shorts or my thighs acceptable for a Christmas party night?

If the consensus is against the shorts, I have 4 hours on Wednesday in which I could get to House of Fraser, M&S, Massimo Dutti, Primark, French Connection, Mint Velvet, Gap, H&M, Zara, Karen Millen, Monsoon and Oasis. I'm 5ft2, size 10-12, hourglass, big boobs and a wobbly belly. I'm pale with mid brown hair so jewel colours (except green) are good on me and I'm a bit afraid of anything patterned (the sequins above are my first ever). I have mulled wine I will happily share for all opinions and recommendations. Thank you!

Thanks MrsW, that's pretty much what I thought about the trousers, and what I couldn't put my finger on about the shorts! Tbh, I'm hesitant about the sparkly top, I feel like it kind of hangs off my boobs and is maybe too shapeless... maybe a tube skirt would balance it out. I shall get googling and start a shopping list for Wednesday.

Really, my legs??? Thank you Blush I've only uncovered them in the last year (I've lost 4 stone - part of the reason I want to look so good for this get together!) and I'm still finding it hard to "see" myself as I am now.

Wear the sparkly top with either back skinny trousers/jeans or a tube skirt. You have fab legs!

A pair of black tight fitting pvc / leatherette trousers with the sparkly top. Xmas Wink

I agree with PP, no to the cream trousers anyway.
Some skinny jeans would be lovely with the sequins top. The Lana skinny jeans in river island are high waisted and give a great figure, they'd be perfect with it.
I have also recently lost weight and got a fab dress in miss selfridge for my 30th, they've loads of lovely sequinned sparkly ones in at the min, my dimensions are pretty much the same as yours so pair of spanx and it would suit you perfect too.
Have a great night

Holy baby Jebus Arete, tight fitting pvc??? Excuse me while I go get my pearls to clutch... But thank you for thinking they would be possible (and for your lovely compliment). I have a lovely leather skirt which I was saving for Christmas day, but it may be nice with the sparkly top. I will go investigate.

I can get to River Island Sillysausage, and I am in need of new jeans, so I will look at the Lana jeans.

The shorts are the wrong colour for the top (or appear to be in the pic). Black shorts would look better.

Can we see the Coast dress for comparison?

Blue, yes, you're right, the colours are all wrong together. The top is silver/grey/black and the shorts are blue, which I thought I might get away with, but it's just not happening.

Right, the Coast dress and the leather skirt with sparkly top are attached here. I love the colour of the dress and the 75% off but I think it might be a bit shapeless around my tummy. I like the skirt and top, but as others have suggested, a tube skirt might be better with the top than the a-line.

I personally really like the shorts and sparkly top combo. Maybe find black shorts? But deffo show legs and have something cut mid thigh.

Totally honest input:
The shorts are too summery looking to me and don't really go with the rest of the outfit. I dislike the cream trousers. The top is good! It would look great with a skirt but not the shape of the one you are wearing! It needs a black pencil skirt and some killer heels which are not as pointy as those you are wearing. :)

This kind of shape:

You have great legs BUT since that top is quite square and boxy I think you need something figure-hugging on your bottom half. I would avoid jersey or tube skirts (that stretchy material!) as they will do nothing to disguise a wobbly tum. You need something that will pull you in, material with a bit of hold and structure. As someone else said, skinny jeans could look great (in black) and if you get a good pair they should do a decent job of restraining tum wobbliness.
I like the dress but not really for the occasion you are describing. It looks more spring/ summer wedding to me.
I love the sparkly top on you, btw!

Ps. If you like the top/ shorts combo, could you not try to get hold of some black shorts? Something like this (if there is no pattern in your sequin top...dont want top and shorts to compete):

Ooh, some really nice Coast ones here with subtle sequin embellishment to pick up sequin theme without appearing OTT:

If money is not an issue, these Ted Baker ones are nice too:

Another vote for the shorts and sparkly top combo but, as others have said, with some other shorts. Possibly black. Even black (faux) leather.

Actually I prefer either of the two new pics. Both lovely.

If you can find a really fantastic eye catching necklace to draw the eye up on the dress I think you'd have a winner.

Thanks for all the advice. I love the new look skirt so I'll see if I can get something like that or a good pair of black shorts.

I would definitely recommend wearing the sparkly top with a pair of black skinny jeans. Get an amazing pair of earrings to go with them, and do some black eyeliner and mascara.

It will look chic and cool, but also very effortless.

Please don't wear those shoes, they are waaaaaay too pointy!!!!!!
