Welcome! This is the thread for those of us who want to abstain from alcohol. We are all at different stages of our journey, and many of us have some hiccups along the way, but we are committed to an exciting, fulfilling, joyful life alcohol-free.

Previous thread is here.

Hi I'm new here. I've been sober since early Feb. Just navigated a first sober Christmas. Be good to get some support and to be able to support others.

Hello!
Still dry here - two weeks and doing alright. Lying low at home with just the family so it hasn't been commented upon much, but I feel good and am sleeping more deeply - although that may be more because I'm off work than not drinking! I've a bottle of sauv Blanc in the fridge that I was given on Xmas eve and so far haven't been tempted.

Umpteen · 28/12/2015 08:32

It's a bit shit to get alcoholic presents, Fluke. Can you give that Sauv Blanc away pdq and make someones's day?

Hello thread 10 Xmas Grin

Thanks Umpteen - it was extremely tiresome. It was a group of other single mums, the common thread being that none of us had our kids on Boxing Day, and was organised by a friend of mine. So nobody really knew each other and we exchanged stories about our irritating exes (this was a good thing)... but then more and more wine was drunk and it all became a bit more about swapping tales of online dating mishaps etc. I am so relieved that if and when I start being more interested in that kind of thing I can be sure I won't be ending up in a scrape because I drank too much on the date and lost all sense of reasonable behaviour. It sounds stupid but when I separated from H it was one of the things I was most worried about! It is just such a relief to know that you no longer need to be scared of your own behaviour.

One of the women on BD said things to me like "but EVERYONE gets hangovers, hangovers are normal!" (in response to me saying I'd stopped because I hated hangovers). Or "I'm really glad I drink because I think it's important for my kids to see that drinking is normal". Hmm

I found it very hard to keep my mouth shut, because I knew that the more I said the more uncomfortable it would make everyone feel. But it was bloody hard work!

Cheesy - glad to hear that everyone is alive and well this morning!

Hello,

I dropped off the previous thread after about 3 weeks off the wine - but then relapsed and have been drinking for the past 3 weeks. But today is my new Day 1, so here I am.

I'm going out tonight but am going to drive, and am looking forward to waking up in the morning feeling proud of myself for not drinking.

Oh yes fluke I'd be giving that Sauv Blanc away pronto if it was me! But then SB was always my wine of choice. Even at 17 months sober I won't have white wine cooling in the fridge.

Good luck BitterLemons - the ability to drive is a godsend. Look forward to seeing everyone's ability to converse coherently deteriorate from about 9pm Xmas Grin

Yes I love my sauv Blanc!! Will probably give it away over the next few days, or if the opportunity doesn't arise I'll just tip it out.

Teapot - it's funny the things people say isn't it! I'm sort of not really telling anyone I've stopped, to avoid those conversations, and if I meet friends, arrange more a coffee/lunch/walk kind of thing.

Hi
I've not really posted much but 100% follow and need this thread for moral support.
I was dry at Christmas
Went roller skating boxing day and broke my arm in 2 places stepping down a small step to the cafe (on skates)
I spent 4 hours in a and e thinking it maybe was just sprained.

Hello all, just checking in!
I will have a drink on Hogmanay and the 1st, as we have two big parties but I will be sensible. Then off the booze - am looking forward to it!

Hi again.

Your poor arm ididn't! I hope you feel better soon.

Disasters and adventures abound in the Cheesy house. MIL fell in the shower this morning. Called an ambulance and thankfully she is basically fine..... bruised, shocked, a bit battered.

I am exhausted. Been dry though the past day or so and it is definitely better and helps me to cope better that I would have otherwise. I am sticking with it. :) Feel good about that to be honest.

Hope everyone is well. Thanks

Hello thread 10! Waves to all :)
Oh no ididn't!
Welcome bitter
Teapot had similar BD experience at boozefest party at SIL's house. The place was drowning in the stuff & it was bloody unbearable. Started at 3pm & most were completely lashed by 7pm. Had to leave at 8pm as it all got too much & the emotional hangover has lasted 2 days :( Roll on January Wink

Hello I'm just checking in. I've kind of lost it over Christmas. I have been drinking on and off as a 'normal' person would Hmm
I'm not now and I am planning a very dry remainder of Dec and Jan and Feb.
NYE is going to be a sober affair as I am driving

Marryoneorbecomeone · 28/12/2015 20:20

Hey Donaj. Drinking like a normal person is an advance on drinking like a drunk. X

Good evening! I was dreading tonight as we had a family dinner but I stuck to alcohol free red wine, topped up my own glass and no one noticed! I am very pleased with myself actually, as I really thought I would wobble tonight. Grin

My drinking is becoming a problem and I need some support please.
I've been using the NHS app to record the units I've got through, and for December it's 90 - and counting. I can't even blame parties or socialising. This is just what I've got through at home, drinking alone.
I use alcohol as a reward or a comfort. Unfortunately I'm surrounded by the stuff - I live 'above the shop' so to speak - so it won't be just a case of not buying bottles with the weekly shop. It's already here, literally 'on tap'.
I'm 56, old enough to know better, lonely and won't be asking for help from family. If I can, I'd like to use this thread to record my progress.
Thanks for listening.

Hello to everyone on the new thread, especially the newbies.

I fell off the wagon for 2.5 weeks over Xmas, I had some sober days mixed in but couldn't string them together. I'm on Day 2 again now. I'd really like to stop drinking for good in 2016. I haven't enjoyed any of the drinks I've had over Xmas but once I'm in self-destruct mode, I can't seem to stop myself Confused

donajimena · 30/12/2015 07:21

Hi spinach . Right. You can do this. You can. Do you have a day in mind to stop?

SpinachJelly · 30/12/2015 07:55

I thought today.
Thanks.
