Whitton.. anyone knows much about it?

We came across a nice property in Whitton. Need to move out of London to buy our first home and it seems this area offers better value for your money than other areas nearby.

Reading an old post on mumsnet, it talks about:

  • sewage smell from Mogden
  • noise from the planes
  • issues with young thugs from Hounslow north or it

The post is old, is that sewage smell still an issue? Down to what area of Whitton is affected?
I’m sure the aircraft noise hasn’t gone away, it’s just something you get when you are close to an airport. However how disturbing is it?

I’m awake so thought I would answer even though I knew Whitton well 20 years ago and haven’t been since. The aircraft noise was very noticeable back in 1999 and I doubt that has got less. It will depend on you and how bothered you are by noise. If you are considering this house you will need to suss that out but bear in mind transport volumes may not be back to pre 2020 levels, so it might not be a representative picture.

Overall, Whitton was then an untrendy suburb but my ex DP’s family all loved it - great proximity to the river, Richmond etc.

thegirlwiththelongblackhair · 04/02/2022 10:57

I live nearby the big Tesco in whitton/ivybridge.

Yes Mogden lane stinks. But not constantly though. And it doesn't come inside the house but it can be a problem sometimes but we never give it any thought.

Most thugs usually stay in hounslow or the ivybridge estate area. But honestly I feel safe here and never had any problems.

it Is Greater London so you are still close to central London benefits! and it only takes me 10 mins drive to Richmond etc. 25 mins into Shepherd's Bush. It's really well connected. Especially the 281 bus route comes through to go straight to Hammersmith from Hampton area.

I love this area and I think you will too. The schools nearby are great. High street has everything you need day to day and it has a community feel, especially around st George day , the whole high street is decorated.

bitchinofhitchen · 04/02/2022 11:03

I used to live (3years ago for 20 years) at the other end of whitton high street and never noticed the smell. Planes yes on a hot summer evening when you are on take off not landing schedules, but you get so used to them it's fine. If you love towards Hounslow the plane noise is worse with also the landing routes being loud.

I never noticed the Hounslow thugs either - I don't think they stay beyond what the estate agents euphemistically call the whitton boarders.

It's a nice little community def worth considering

hollygoflightly · 04/02/2022 11:53

I live near Whitton - it's fine. It's your average London 'burb with a normal mix of people. You get used to planes so quickly. Mogden does sometimes have a whiff in the air but it's really not that bad. It's near places like Twickenham and Richmond, it's near the motorways so good for day trips out of town, and there's decent schools. Lots to recommend!

Salome61 · 04/02/2022 23:46

I was born in Whitton. Where is the house? I used to live on Hounslow Road with my parents, then Dean Road when I married, which is 'Whitton borders'. I'm in the NE now and haven't been back for a while.

It has a nice villagey feel, they have a Facebook community page. As others have said it's near Twickenham and Richmond, and if you go into Hounslow you have the underground into town.

Starseeking · 05/02/2022 06:41

It really depends where in Whitton the house is.

If it's south of the rugby ground/near Ivybridge, or near Mogden, it can be smelly at times, but if the house is in Whitton proper (closer to the station). Thames Water have invested millions over the years to improve the air quality, so I don't think it is anywhere near as bad as it was 10-15 years ago.

I grew up nearby, and my impression of Whitton was that it has an older/retirement feel to it. Of course there are younger families and schools etc, but it has an older, white demographic. The high street reflects that. It's mostly independent shops, though there are a couple of coffee shop chains. For proper shopping you'd need to go to Kingston, which is only 10-15 minutes drive away and huge. I love Kingston shopping.

Whitton also benefits from having semi-fast trains into Waterloo (stop at Twickenham, Richmond, Putney, Clapham Junction and Waterloo), so it only takes about 30 minutes to get into town if you time it correctly.

Good things are that you are next door to Twickenham, Richmond, A316/M3 are also on one end of Whitton, so handy if you need to go South. M4/M25 and the airport are also nearby so it's well connected.

I don't think "Hounslow thugs" have much interest in Whitton, there's really not a lot there for them! If you need the tube, and are feeling brave, Hounslow has 3 TfL stations for you to choose from, though the easiest to get to from Whitton is Hounslow East.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, very kind of you to take the time.

The house is near Hazel close, see link below. Maybe not too affected, although I imagine you might still smell it depending on wind temperature etc.

Both for that and for the noise I guess I’ll need to spend sometime in the area and test it by myself. When I spent some afternoons in Twickenham not long ago I don’t recall thinking about noise from planes but maybe it’s due to the pandemic (less flights…).

In terms of transport, since someone brought it up, while it’s true from Whitton you can get to Waterloo in 30 minutes, I saw there are only 3 trains per hour at peak time (maybe 4 tops). Instead from Richmond it’s like 10 per hr.

Interesting to read it’s mostly older people in the area,

Where is the best place to be for secondary schools (currently in a catholic school where we live).

Thanks!!

You'd be within walking distance of Sir Richard Reynolds Catholic secondary school in Twickenham.
You also have Richmond Upon Thames school, Twickenham school (it's in Whitton - don't ask!) And Turing Academy ( new site about to be finished in Whitton) very close by. If you have girls, on a good year, you may just be able to get into Waldegrave from Hazel Close.

Fiddlersgreen · 06/02/2022 12:44

Turing House School is not an academy

Salome61 · 06/02/2022 14:10

Hazel Close used to be a really nice road, some interesting brick work on the houses down there. My Gran lived in Milner Drive. Good luck when you view.

Starseeking · 06/02/2022 17:13

I see you are in Whitton proper, and in terms of direction, you are South West of Mogden (it's directly above the stadium on your map). You should be ok regarding any smells, as they should have dissipated sufficiently that you wouldn't notice them by the time they get to your area.

Richard Reynolds Catholic College is behind the roads opposite Twickenham station, so either one train stop, a bus ride away or a 20 minute walk. It's a fairly new school (less than 5 years of results, I believe), but I hear it's outstanding.

The road you are considering is stuffed with bungalows, which characterises Whitton for me. It's a quiet area though, and you should be able to get a 3 bed for £600-700k.

We moved to Whitton (from zone 2 North) 4 years ago and love it, really decent high street, proximity to Twickenham is great and bus to Richmond m/Kingston. Our current house is for sale and we’re looking to move … 3 streets over!

Noelia1 · 12/02/2022 23:41

Oh cool where about in Whitton ? Could you send the link ?!

VittonWillage · 13/02/2022 07:21

Just off High St.

Salome61 · 13/02/2022 16:09

Thanks VittonWillage, I've just had a google trip along the High Street and a look at my childhood home. So many good shops now - even a Lidl.

WiltshireMoonraker · 02/04/2022 19:57

Hi there, great post. We've been viewing properties today. I'd be keen to hear about your thoughts on the two areas we looked at. The first property was on Waverley road off Powder Mill Lane and the second the other side of Whitton around Warren Road near the Chase Bridge school. How would you compare the two areas? Keen to know your thoughts

LD9229 · 30/05/2022 20:40

Hi everyone, this tread has been really helpful!
My husband and I are currently looking at houses in Whitton. I’m not overly familiar with the area as I only moved to the Uk 2 years ago.
i wonder if someone could share a list of streets I should avoid 😅 we’ve seen a property on Vincent road (behind the high street) and I’m just worried about rodents etc…I heard some awful stories about shops being infested which leads me to think this will have a knock on throughout t😱🙏🏻

@WiltshireMoonraker

The benefits of being on the powder mill estate are proximity to the crane river & nature reserve, slightly closer to Twickenham (or at least more convenient) and slightly lower prices/bigger houses (depending how you see it).

For is (with small kids) being close to high st, parks and chase bridge (for school) is more convenient. A few decent bus routes to choose from too.

@LD9229 the only rodents I’ve seen in this area would be near the river in their natural habitat. We’ve for friends on Vincent road and they’ve never seen rats either 🤷‍♂️

SantoPalo · 28/12/2023 09:08

Hello, I know this thread is old but will give it a go. We are currently looking at properties in Whitton within catchment area for good schools. Are there any roads that we should avoid?
Thanks

Noelia1 · 02/01/2024 14:45

Hello! Happy to help with what I know - where are you looking specifically and what is your budget? We moved in the area a year ago (so still feeling the pains of house viewings and all that!) and really enjoying it so far :)

user1494050295 · 02/01/2024 14:54

I live in st Margaret’s nearby and a good friend is on Milner drive next to the house you like. It’s got a v community feels lots of families with young children. My good friend and neighbour has recently become head of twickenham school which is on the up. Great bus and train links. Mogden isn’t the issue it once was. You are close to the RFU so need to plan accordingly. Good luck

user1494050295 · 02/01/2024 14:57

Also Richard Reynolds school is catholic. I have friends whose children go there and are quite happy. Rubbish at sport though

SantoPalo · 11/01/2024 17:10

@Noelia1 hello and thank you. We have a budget of up 750k. Looking for properties within walking distance of Whitton Station or Strawberry hill. Ideally a property near kneller Gardens, Twickenham Green or Crane Park. We looked at properties on Lincoln Ave, Montrose, constance Rd. Are there areas to avoid please

SantoPalo · 11/01/2024 17:12

@user1494050295 I am so pleased to hear that Mogden isn't as a bigger an issue as it had been before?
