London off the beaten track

Hope you'll forgive me for starting two London threads in quick succession, but I'm spending a fair bit of time there over the summer.

Things I have done, like and would happily do again:
Wellcome Collection
Geffyre (I think this has just re-opened?)
Hunterian (still closed, I think)
John Soanes
Walking from St Katherine's Docks, through Wapping and Limehouse and checking out the old pubs
Highgate Cemetery.
Kings Cross to Camden or Angel along the canal
Primrose Hill (not really off the beaten path but very lovely)
William Morris house
Greenwich stuff, and walking from Greenwich to Deptford

Anything either pretty, or with good historical interest would particularly appeal!

@BadgerFace

Green Chain walk from Nunhead Cemetery to Beckenham Place Park.
X-post - some of the Green Chain Walk is also on the route of the Capital Ring

(great minds, eh?)

I think it's the one that Angliski mentioned earlier

Have you been to The Clink www.clink.co.uk/ or onto the replica of the Golden Hinde www.goldenhinde.co.uk/

They are both on Tooley street, which in itself is a fascinating walk...it also has the ruins of Winchester Palace.

We enjoyed climbing the Monument a few years back (which I think I got from a MN recommendation), and seem to remember it was only a few pounds!

Greenwich stuff, and walking from Greenwich to Deptford

From maritime Greenwich you can walk along the riverfront to North Greenwich and the O2. Well, nearly all along the riverfront. Lovely views of the river and the far side of Canary Wharf, you pass a big ship moored as some kind of artwork with somebody living on it, the path goes inland to weave through through some kind of shipyard, and past a golf course incongruously next to a wasteland. It's a really surprising walk, you get a feel for the pace of change in the area with lots of (paused) building work, then suddenly you're at the O2 and all hustle and bustle, and you can catch the tube home.

If it is open, Wilson's music hall in Shadwell is lots of fun. Bar and theatre in a restored music hall.

Going down to one of the 'beaches' by the Thames at low tide gives a whole new view of the river and the boat traffic - near Wapping and Rotherhithe.

Horniman museum is a nice day out, if open.

Walking around the Olympic Park in Stratford is fun - if you take swim gear you can swim in the Olympics pool - surreal the first time without the crowds.

Rotherhithe is a pretty area with the Mayflower Pub (where Mayflower set sail from), a film costume library (was open to public pre covid not sure now), and an interesting history as was previously Docks and the place names reflect that. Previously you could catch a ferry from the tip of the peninsula to Canary Wharf, not sure if it is running now, or you could walk along river either to Tower Bridge or Maritime Greenwich, both interesting walks.

If at the Geffrye museum, there are lots of Vietnamese restaurants along Kingsland Road, and some cafes in the railway arches. You can walk to Haggerston park which has a city farm and great cafe.

Victoria Park is lovely, and you can walk along the canal to Limehouse Dock. Near Limehouse Dock is a big yurt with a cafe inside. Nice walk from there either to Canary Wharf or Wapping along river.

This blog is worth following if you like hidden corners of London.

SquirmOfEels · 25/07/2021 22:13

Doesn't Rotherhithe also have the (Isambard Kingdom) Brunel Museum?

I've never visited but it's vaguely on my 'to do' list - has anyone been?

Another vote for the Keeping of the Keys ceremony. It is magical. A real piece of history.

The Postal Museum is surprisingly good and do include a trip on the Mail Rail. DH and I went without any kids although also good for them.
You will be able to do this in the future

I have this set of books - London's Hidden Walks - and love them for taking me to places I wouldn't have considered.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/07/2021 09:41

Thanks for these. The blog is great, and I will definitely check out the books.

The Diamond Geezer blog has loads of London info - worth a browse, I'd say. Old posts are archived by date, so you can find yourself meandering through and finding out all sorts of stuff, with reviews/recommendations on what to see and do

This is the a museums page

It's quite old, but still worth a look - even if only for the collection of links

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/08/2021 21:01

Thanks!

@mynameiscalypso

My dad spent most of lockdown doing blue plaque walks through bits of London that he didn't know that well and really enjoyed it.
@mynameiscalypso where did he get maps for this please. I think my Dad would love this but I can't find an easily mappable way of searching for them.
ThirtyCharacterUsernamesOnly30 · 19/08/2021 00:14

@Tickly

I've not used it myself but in the iPhone App Store (and probably the Android etc version) there is a blue plaque app.
