Enfield riots?

Just seen on Twitter and in a few articles like this, that there are meant to be plans for a riot in Enfield tonight and riot police are in the town centre?

Used to live there, and got family there (luckily a fair distance from the centre), but fucking hell! What the hell is going on?

Boredom + criminality is what's going on. Hope Enfield is OK

Me too. It's not my favourite area in the world, but there's no need for so much destruction.

Like Tottenham, it isn't a rich area, and damaging stores etc is just making the area poorer.

DH on phone to his mum now, telling her to stay at home just in case.

Well, I've been saying this would happen for a few years. Strikes and rioting, the the cost of living going sky high.

They Smurf moving being released makes it all slightly surreal and takes me back to my youth.

The police are warning against irresponsible use of social media - not least by pointing out that much of what appears is wrong.

I do hope that no-one is sucked into this. There are already people injured and families left homeless after their homes were destroyed by fire, plus destroyed/damaged businesses.

It would be a tragedy if any of this happened.

The riots have nothing to do with the cost of living. It's the usual story of criminals getting boozed up & taking advantage of some local incident to have a pop at the police. Did you see the pictures from Tottenham.... chucking bricks and yakking on the mobile at the same time! "Guess where I am!?" They were having fun...

The stuff on Twitter is beyond loopy. If we believe what Twitter is saying, then all of Enfield is razed to the ground already Hmm

Hopefully the rumours are based on nothing at all, and no one turns up.

Sadly Ch4 news has just quoted a police statement saying there has been some disorder in Enfield. I suppose we'll hear more as events unfold.

But this really isn't a Tottenham issue any more - and Mark Duggan's brother has been making public statements today, saying rioting should not be condoned and that the family didn't want his brother's death linked to rioting.

So there have to be separate factors in this.

Yes there are riot police now. I grew up there Sad

Pearsons and HMV have had their windows smashed, and a police car has been smashed up too.

Hope this is it for tonight.

Impressed that the local papers have been quick with updates from 3pm when the town was evacuated, BBC have still not mentioned it at all.

It's been on Sky news. A fb friend just posted a pic of the riot police walking past his window. How scary would that be! Sad

MIL was actually in town when they all turned up to evacuate the town :(

DH's uncle lives round the corner from Tescos, hoping they don't go that way.

My point was that we are in a time of general social unrest. I saw it coming. History has a habit of repeating itself.

Beeb are indeed being very measured in their coverage. They do however mention it in a general London riots item (at 19:33hrs)

"On Sunday evening, windows at two shops in Enfield High Street were smashed and a police car damaged.

There are no further confirmed details at present about the disturbance in Enfield".

Lynette - I remember riots from 1970s onwards too! And I agree - it's often cyclical and therefore predictable. And it's summer.

Yep, it's summer!

But usually when I mention that I get a Hmm.

Riots always seem to happen in summer. Maybe we can seed some clouds to p* it down on North London this evening?

BBC just said the stuff in Enfield is a "false alarm" Hmm

It really does need to chuck it down, should put some of the idiots off at least

Well the summer connexion is a bit bizarre - but riots in UK do seem to take place between April and October.

It's when it gets dark, and people are harder to identify which will be most telling. Let's hope not.
