Or the 6th July for IB Results! So close - starting to get a bit nervous now! And that's just me. DS doesn't seem too worried yet - which is good cos there's absolutely nothing he can do about it now.

I've bought him a duvet cover for university in the summer sales. Here's hoping he needs it!

Blametheparents, I've got quite a few bottom drawer items for DS (all currently gathering dust on his bedroom floor at the moment) already. Hope I'm not jinxing him.

He is the baby and it's all my fault apparently (though for once, he is right).
It hard at the moment as all his mates are off to the Spoons and he can't go. Fortunately they are delaying the Lads holiday till after his birthday so he can drink.

@BringOnTheScience - Waves back! It’s come round so quickly. It’s DS’s 18th birthday between now and results day so I think it’ll really hit him how close it is after that.

Ds took his last exam yesterday morning and by evening had a rotten cold and sore throat. He said his body just gave up after! I am dosing him up and hoping it passes quickly.

In the meantime, he spent the day investigating bank accounts and such like. He turns 18 in a week and a half so a junior ISA account he has also suddenly changes and he has access to it.

So many things to do and think about!

I know what you mean sluj my DD is 8th August and is fed up with being the only one who can't have a drink when they all go out. The pubs are so much hotter on ID checks now than they ever were when I was her age!

The pubs in my town have bouncers in the evenings so you cant even go in if you are under 18, even for a Pepsi

sluj DD had the same problem, having a July birthday. In town you can't get into any pub or bar on a Saturday after 10pm unless you are 18. As a result she hasn't been out much as her friends have been away at university.

That is about the only thing I haven't bought as I don't know what accommodation DD will get, and therefore don't know what size bed she will have. Many students halls have three quarter or double beds in them these days.

blametheparents I think we'll be a bit apprehensive on the approach to results day.

DD is going into catered. She boards so has everything she needs for her room and herself, which basically fills up every inch of our small car, so be warned! Those that like clothes will easily have 3-4 suitcases (at least mine will as she'll be 400 miles away and can't easily change stuff over).

Another one here with an August birthday, but after results day. She tells us she'll be away celebrating with friends!

Hello.Dd2 still abroad but home Saturday. Ive missed her and not looking forward to September at all! She's ready for some relaxation now though

Maybe we should have a list of ideas for people to start thinking about getting for DC going away this autumn from the combined experience of mumsnet!!!
Heres a start and things my older DC found useful in addition to the normal list of kitchenware etc:
Topper mattress and mattress cover (often the mattresses they have are in a dire state)
Coathangers
Coin Change (for washing machines if they have that type)
Small slow cooker
Small air fryer
Sticky hang up hooks- non marking ones are good
Extension lead- (he one with USB points is useful)
Floor mat for bathroom or flip-flops
2 sets of sheets/towels (in the faint hope they might wash a set and not just bring them home!!)

I also created a two week menu for No1 DS (who was all over the place) with an accompanying shopping list on Tesco (local supermarket to him) so that he just had to order it every two weeks and know that he had enough to get him through (his course was pretty much 9-5 every day).

When I was young it was very unusual to have a summer birthday but it seems much more usual now. Wonder why that would be? Contraception and people planning to have their DC in summer (warmer) months?

DS bucks the MN trend as he was 18 months ago, although yet to go into a pub or drink alcohol!!! He's just gone off on his hols with his friends. Let's hope it's a five go not so mad in... adventure! Find it amusing that the girls in his year group (only about 10% of the cohort) have gone off inter-railing and the boys are doing package tours...????

awanderingminstrel I'd advise caution about taking any electrical kitchen items at first as many places do not allow them in communal kitchens due to so-called fire risks. Best to assess the situation first before buying stuff separately

2001 was the year of the boys , birthwise and the year of summer born boys. No one can explain why but it has had a knock on effect on educational data!

There must have been something in the water, Piggy? How very strange. So how many more boys than girls were born? Isn't it usually 51%: 49% (but more boys die growing up) ish?

RedHelenB a class will be too small a sample size to have any statistical significance.

DS went to a boys only school so it wasn't apparent!

DS2 is another summer born boy - 31st August - and lots of his friends are still not 18 either. To be honest, they seem to have found ways around it - enough of his friends now are 18 to be able to get the drinks.
