SPOILERS!!!!

I feel guilty for even DARING to say this in RL, everybody seems to love it, it’ll win all the awards and Oscars and everything, of course it will.

And I did like some of the performances and stuff.

But God, I hated what they did with the flashbacks and flash forwards. I went with two girls who should have loved this and from talking to them afterwards, they clearly didn’t understand a lot of it. Eg that Beth was ill and recovered but got ill again and died. They though Jo was dreaming the bit where she recovered.

And they didn’t realise that Meg had children.

I know I know, they might be just a bit slow on the uptake Grin, but it shouldn’t be a confusing story.

They took the heart out of the story imho. What’s worse, they made it boring.Sad

There’s a scene towards the end where Jo writes her book and has all the pages spread out on the floor, getting them in the right order. IF ONLY GRETA HAD DONE THAT WHEN SHE PUT HER FILM TOGETHER.

I’m sorry. But I need to know I’m not alone.

I haven’t actually seen the whole film - only the trailer and various snippets. It looks incredibly twee - and all the casting is wrong. And I read a review by someone who was disappointed in it.

I’m very wary of encountering anything that might spoil my vision of the novel ...

I didn't like it either. It was like they filmed the story, chopped it into bits, dropped them all in the cutting room floor and put it all back together in the wrong order. Emma Watson was wooden, as usual and "Beth" looked far too healthy. Laurie looked about 12 and the Jo's romance with the Professor was hurried and inexplicable. It was rubbish.

I quite liked it but if I hadn't read the book before I wouldn't have had a clue what was going on. I was amazed how quickly Jo's hair grew back. Amy was the only one who looked different in the different time frames. She looked like a young girl at the start and much more grown up later on. The rest of them looked just the same so it was harder to follow what time we were in.

I agree 100%

Lovely in places but not Oscar worthy imo

Loved the film, but I agree:

*The flash backs/forwards were confusing
*Amy was badly cast and not nearly vain enough
*Professor Bhaer was too young
*Laurie was too young
*Marmee was too thin

Oh hooray, thanks everyone for making me feel not so alone in the world.Grin

I could forgive the casting issues and stuff if they’d just told the story in the right order tbh.

And yes, we saw about two minutes of the professor and then suddenly she’s in love with him for the ending?Confused

I maybe alone in this but I never found the book as inspirational as others seem to so I won't even bother with the film. Probably a minority of one.

I haven't bothered to see it. The book was pretty dire too.

I have never found the book inspiring (my mum gave me a copy that she'd been gifted in the early 60s) or particularly feminist, and found the dialogue remarkably soppy. I don't have much interest in the film.

Haven’t seen the film yet but there’s an interesting review of it in the Guardian.

I did quite like the ending - Jo ending up as a spinster sat well with me!

But it was so cheesy. Costumes kept me going...

It’s the article by Hadley Freeman

@lilyfire just had to google that article, I’d missed it. Another one for our team - yay.

Jo married Prof Bhaer. She wasn't a spinster. They had children too.

Went to see it at baby cinema and was so bored!

PuppyMonkey · 27/01/2020 14:20

@MrsJoshNavidi - that was just the ending the publisher bloke insisted on, that Jo agreed to write to ensure the book got published. I think it was heavily implied that IRL she didn’t marry anyone (hence the cool and gloomy shots of her gazing out the window looking thoughtful juxtaposed with the warm, cheery shots of the Prof and the kids and everyone all happy in the “fairytale” ending).

Or some bollocks like that, anyway.Grin

I watched the trailer the other day and even that was boring. Even from the that I could tell I wouldn't like the casting.

Was going to mention that Hadley Freeman article. Summed up exactly why I couldn't be bothered to see it. Would rather see fresh new stories than bland attempts to modernise/do a feminist angle on such a twee old fashioned story.

Oh I'm another that didn't ever really like the book and could never understand how it was so loved. I also hated the way Laurie ended up with Amy (and my DD shouts about this all the time, she thinks it is totally ridiculous that a boy who loved you would marry your sister).

When I heard the director and the cast I thought I would rather swim in the Atlantic ocean in January than go and watch it. I never can see the charm of Saoirse Ronan and find Emma Watson wooden. And no one could ever top Susan Sarandon in the role of Marmee for me.

I refuse to see it. I loathe Emma Watson, Florence Pugh AND Saoirse Ronan so that's Meg, Amy and Jo out.
Not familiar with the actress playing Beth, but I can't stand Beth anyway, she's so wet I always look forward to her dyingGrin
Whenever they do yet another Little Women adaptation, my main interest is in who's playing Amy, I adore Amy. Unfortunately Florence Pugh has never impressed me in anything...
