Hello again

I didnt want to join in the end of a really long thread, so thanks for starting a new one.

I stockpiled a small amount in march and mostly used it up now. I'm restocking this week with mostly tinned fruit and veg. We have lots of meat in the freezer but could use some suggestions for longlife/shelf stable meat. Salami, pepperami etc. I'm not keen on corned beef or spam Envy but I have ordered a tin of pulled pork from asda which is surprisingly well reviewed!

Just done a quick list of what needs topping up from March stash and also a list to get if it's still looking dodgy a couple of weeks out.

On that list, I'm wondering what I can add that's fresh but will last. So eg huge bag of potatoes, apples (?), butternut squash, onions...

Any other ideas?

Reluctantly checking in.

Checking in! Got my water purification tablets from Amazon. Only £2 so I don't mind if I never use them! I've listed all my freezer items and ticking them off as I use them. Planning on going to farmfoods and getting frozen fruit for pies and puddings etc. Good tip 're freezing eggs!

I wasn't that impressed with the frozen fruit and veg from Farm Foods so will be going to Iceland or Morrisons I think.

I bought some bags of mixed nuts and some Meridian peanut butter on offer in Sainsburys today (£1.25 a jar) so that's a bit more protein.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/08/2019 21:35

Farmfoods' frozen veg is a bit grim, yes.

Our DC won't touch the frozen fruit, so we need to use that to make space.

I keep thinking of more stuff I need. It's never-ending!

Hi - we have a small apple tree and I was thinking of trying to preserve the apples in some form - what's the best way to do this?

Report
noodlenosefraggle · 28/08/2019 21:42

Oh really? I haven't been there for ages, but someone said their veggie meatballs were good so I thought I'd do a bulk buy. I'll stick to Lidl then.

Report
Dontlickthetrolley · 28/08/2019 22:08

I've also still for a kilo of chorizo I bought for £1 for the failed March Brexit, so today I bought some paella and risotto rice.

Checking in with a heavy heart. I worked through my food stash over the summer but still have lots of non-food items stored. Will start ramping up again this week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2019 22:17

Tomatoes are still drying! They seem to be taking their time.

I'm far too wound up for sleeping tonight, which is a bit of a bugger really as I'm up and out early.

@getupgonow I make thick apple sauce and use it in pies, danish pastries etc. It's basically chopped simmered apple, sugar and lemon juice so preserves well in jars or in the freezer.

Make sure jars are clean and sterile (e.g. boiled).

Thanks Bercows. We haven’t really touched the March stash as all but a couple of things had long dates but things now look way worse than they did then so I will be increasing stocks further. Space (London flat) is more of an issue for us than budget so I will be looking for new places to stash things this weekend.

Blimey.

I agree about preserving apples by stewing and I prefer to freeze, not confident about sterilising jars.

Report
NoWordForFluffy · 29/08/2019 05:36

Sterilising jars is easy. Wash. Put upside down on baking tray in oven. Turn temp to 100° and turn on once you put the jars in. Let it heat to 100°, leave on that temp for a minute or so, turn off. Sterilised jars!
