Temping

Do the ear thermometers work for temping? I used one this morning and one ear was 36.1 and the other 36.7!!!

I think ideally you need one that reads to two decimal points. I mean, you might get a very rough idea using an ear thermometer, but I'm not sure how reliable it'd be for tracking small changes linked to ov. I can't remember what make mine was now, but you can get fairly cheap ones from Amazon (though not ideal if you were wanting to start tracking today, I realise).

I remember reading only oral or vaginal temps are accurate...

Two decimal places is better too.

I use one that isn't ideal (only one decimal point) but it's still useful as long as you're quite strict about making sure you test at the same time each morning - I've been temping for 5 cycles now and there are blips here and there where I've not measured properly but I can see a pattern :)

Mine was a peppa pig digital one from Superdrug...I'm sure there are better ones out there Grin

Forgot to add - I measure orally, and as soon as I wake up (I keep it right by the bed so minimal movement!)

Great thanks, I've ordered one. Do you take your temp lying down in bed first thing?

I use a two decimal point one and take it orally. I have to remember to take it as soon as I wake up. If I half wake up but doze for ten mins and then take it I find it is considerably higher and throws my graph all out. I've been temping for five cycles now and it's only the last two I've really started to see a pattern with my body cues (not just cm) and temp. I don't even bother poas'ing anymore as I know from my temps when I'm due on and whether AF is coming.

That's good. Do you find the cm-charting easy too? I think I've ov'd but I have creamy cm, is that correct?

Some months are easier than others. My other cues are much more obvious. The oestrogen surge causes my hypermobility to flare up something chronic and the cramps are far worse than when AF comes. I normally go to ibuprofen for AF cramps but daren't risk it when ovulating and paracetamol just doesn't cut it.
Your cm is almost clear and stretchy when fertile and can be all sorts of other consistencies the rest of the time. If you have creamy cm you are not in your fertile window. Around 7 days after ovulation there is another oestrogen surge which can cause some women to have the egg white cm, and this in turn can cause confusion. This is why temping is handy.

Interesting. And would that second oestrogen surge be picked up on an opk? As I had 2 surges this month - 7 days apart.

No as opks pick up your luteinising (sp?) hormone not oestrogen. Have you recently come off a hormonal contraception?

No. No idea why I had 2 but it's my first cycle since MC so maybe I tried to ov but didn't quite make it the first time!

Ok so I used the BBT this morning and I had been awake for 10 mins but was still in bed. But still got 2 different readings (different by 0.6) so kept doing it until I got the same reading.

Anyone else experience this?

The main things to remember are to take your temp consistently. So for example, I take mine at roughly the same time every morning, and always out the thermometer under the left side of my tongue. As long as you are consistent you will see the pattern. The actual number is irrelevant really, it's the rise and fall over your cycle that you need to see.
If you take your temp in your ear, the one you were sleeping on is likely to be warmer than the other. It's recommended that you do in the mouth or vaginal/anal temps for your BBT. You should also record the first temp you take, otherwise you could drive yourself mad doing it over and over. My temp can fluctuate just lying in bed, hence why I take it immediately. I also noticed a .4 drop every day when I changed from a winter duvet to a summer one. Then when we went away and stayed in a warm hotel it went back up again for those mornings.
I'm ever so sorry to hear you had a MC. Your body can gear up for ovulation and then not go through with it. It will then try again. I have ovulated late this month due to stress although by body still prepared itself as normal.

No problem and thank you! We need all the luck we can get as it's cycle 13 for us with an appointment booked at the fertility clinic in three weeks. I'm hoping we won't need the appointment! Feel free to get in touch in the future. I feel like I'm becoming well versed in this TTC lark even if we can't get it right!

Are you ttc #1? Hope 13 is lucky for you!

And if not, doesn't hurt to get on the system just in case x

Number two for me number one for my partner. Preliminary tests all came back normal so we're none the wiser.

Simplydivine, how long did it take to conceive #1? I think people have fertile and not so fertile cycles. My acupuncturist told me that you get good and bad batches of eggs so hopefully you have some super fertile times coming your way x

He was an accident Blush didn't even know there was a possibility of being pregnant. It was nine years ago so I probably was more fertile. All we can do is keep trying. I've got to have an internal ultrasound at this fertility appointment and I'm dreading it as I have problems with my pelvis and hips.
We've tried a dirrerent tack this month. Something similar to sperm meets egg plan. The problem with that is my ovulation was delayed due to stress so my cycle is about three days out compared to normal. I'm 3dpo now, so 10 days to go!

That's good you know when you ov'd so the timing must have been right. FX!

You don't want to take lots of readings. You want to take one oral reading the second you wake up and before you move/go to the Loo/have a drink. And use that reading. Your temp starts to rise very quickly after waking so you want the temp as close to your sleeping as you can. Ideally you would set an alarm for 30 mins before our normal waking time and take it then...

Could anyone share a chart of BBT over an average month so I can see what it's supposed to look like? Preferably in degrees Celsius. TIA!

Here is last full cycle's. It was a bit too textbook... This one is a bit more 'peaky' so far!
