For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

I wanted Octavia but DH said no as it's too poncey. I still love it though and am trying to persuade my friend to use it!

Apparently it'd be cruel to call a child this hmm

MrsMattie Sat 04-Oct-08 21:31:33

Loads of the really strong biblical ones e.g. Moses, Ezekiel.

Ramona, when I told my dd that is what I would have loved to call her she was sad as she says she would have loved that name - would suit her aswell and be much more unusual

Athur...although hardly a secret and vetoed by DH...also academic as it looks like we're fated to have lovely girls.

I love Julian too but it's the name of a significant ex.

Imagine if it got back to him I'd called my DS Julian. He'd assume I was still in love with him.

LackaDAISYcal Sat 04-Oct-08 21:34:18

Rufus....DH says it's a dog's name

Maisie....again vetoed by DH.

Cantandwont Sat 04-Oct-08 21:34:41

Clementine, Ursula, Arthur, Felix - apparently all "cruel"

ShinyPinkShoes Sat 04-Oct-08 21:35:03

Tallulah grin

I think Silas is a little bit close to 'silage' and also can't help thinking of silas marner so it has tragic connotations. Know what you mean though.

I loved Gabriel or Scarlett but didn't quite have enough conviction to carry it through. Love hearing when other people have used them though. makes me feel strangely envy!

littlelamb Sat 04-Oct-08 21:35:29

Carrie. My surname would make it too too cruel.

EyeballsintheSky Sat 04-Oct-08 21:35:31

Octavia, Ophelia, Lysander, Lucien, Demelza

StrangeTown Sat 04-Oct-08 21:35:42

Genevieve ( not sure if that's even how you spell it)

Jesse for boy (think you can only get away with this is US)

WinkyWinkola Sat 04-Oct-08 21:36:03

Clementine is lovely.

angrypixie Sat 04-Oct-08 21:37:15

I wanted Noah or Gabriel for a boy both vetoed as 'cruel'

Benedict, I went off it when one told me that he had lived with Bendy Dick as a nickname throughout school.

Tilly and Ellie I love them both but wouldn't use them when I realized that I was really childish and couldn't help rhyming them as Silly-Tilly and Smelly-Ellie grin

I agree with Ophelia, it's so pretty but what would it be shortened to? Phil? Not so nice.
