How tidy do you get your house every day?

I wouldn't naturally be the most tidy person and my husband is probably tidier than average.

Tell me honestly what your standards are? I have 2 kids, 3 and 5. I take contracts, this year through choice I was off for 12 weeks over summer.

I make sure that I do all the cooking (lunch, snacks, dinner but he makes porridge in the morning) and 100% of the laundry. I make sure that the dishwasher is loaded sides wiped down. I wouldn't always sweep the floor or mop more than twice a week. We do have a cleaner who does a weekly deep clean weekly.

There would be a lot of toys everywhere downstairs but I have often run out of steam before I tidy them...

Dishwasher loaded and sides wiped down is my goal, but some days I don't even manage that 🙈 if the toys are getting a bit much it might be worth doing a declutter and putting some away or making sure everything has its place so you can encourage them to keep on top of things?
I love my cleaner and between you and yours it sounds like youre on top of keeping the place clean, so I would look for the things that make it difficult to keep on top of (aside from the 2 kids obvs!). One of mine is stuff that won't go in the dishwasher, so I'm trying to swap stuff out for things that can like getting rid of plastic cuos/plates/ bowls now that DD is older.

DucksFlyTogether · 03/09/2021 07:47

I'm just gonna say I'm a neat freak.

Every day by 8pm, the kitchen is completely clean, dishes washed, counters all clear and wiped down, kitchen table clear and cleaned. Put away all toys in the living room in to the toy chest, kitchen floor swept living room vacuumed. The bathroom also at 9pm after I've brushed my teeth gets a wipe down with flash bathroom and toilet duck put down the toilet over night.

It's only me and DS. I can't relax in a messy room. I live minimalistic in my tiny 2 bedroom house. My house does look like a show house by 8pm.

5pm - 8pm though looks like toys r us exploded and the kitchen is "in progress"

Bedrooms are always tidy bed mades at 7:30am after waking clothes are always put away by myself once they come out of the washer dryer. So no clothes laying about.

Saturday's the deep clean of vacuuming bedrooms, stairs and hallways and mopping the bathroom floor and kitchen floor happens.

I have to say though it's one adult one child and DS does model my tidy up behaviour now.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 03/09/2021 07:52

I'm a clean freak two BUT when mine were 3 and 5 no way could I.
I have a bit more time off lately so decluttered and batch cooked so I literally have the house sparking each evening. The hour I used to spend cooking is spent whizzing around with a cloth and even decluttering some more.

But not when they were smaller (now 6 and 7)

FlumpsAreShit · 03/09/2021 07:52

I have a 13 year old and a 18 month old. Pregnant and we both work full time. I do all the cooking and most tidying, DH does the kitchen every night and whatever else he's told to do and we have a cleaner once a week. Kitchen gets swept daily but apart from that only the cleaner does the floors, dusting etc. She does come for 3-4 hours a week though.

I like the house to be tidy every night but in realise it's only tidy about 4 days out of 7 every week. It's quite a big house though so if the snug and playroom are v messy we shut the door on them and sit in one of the two other sitting rooms Blush

The bedroom has to be tidy every night for me, that's a non negotiable.

Houseofvelour · 03/09/2021 07:53

I have 2 kids, 2 and 3.
My house is never really messy. I always clean as I go but I don't mop floors. I have a cleaner who comes and does that.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 03/09/2021 07:53

Freak too not twoGrin

Hemingwaycat · 03/09/2021 07:54

I try to clean as I go so it doesn’t build up. The washing machine is on daily which just can’t be helped because I have 5 DC and use reusable nappies so it’s just endless. The kitchen is always clean because I make sure if it’s my turn to cook, I clean as I go then finish the last of the cleaning after dinner. DH makes more of a mess than me when he cooks but it still gets cleaned as soon as we’ve finished eating. I sweep and mop every morning. Jobs like the bathroom and downstairs loo tend to be done twice a week but I bleach the loos daily. I vacuum once a week because the only carpet we have is on the stairs and I sweep the wood flooring daily.

Toys are a battle. I try to encourage almost 3 year old DS to tidy ones he’s finished with away before getting the next ones out. Usually just do a sweep of them all before they go to bed in the evening. I can’t settle in the evening unless I know everywhere is tidy.

MissCruellaDeVil · 03/09/2021 07:55

Tidy every day before bed, kids help tidy their room before bedtime and story. Keeps the house in a good state and helps me sleep!

PileOfBooks · 03/09/2021 07:57

I want more rooms and a cleaner 😁

userxx · 03/09/2021 08:02

@DucksFlyTogether wow, I need some of your discipline!! I also live in a tiny two bed house and it sometimes feels like the walls are closing in even further when it's messy. It gets me down.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 03/09/2021 08:10

I live in a constant struggle to keep up with the mess me, DD7 and DDog make. Our house is too big for us and I just can't keep up with the mess and cleaning. It is a source of much stress and I am trying to declutter to streamline a bit.

AntiSocialDistancer · 03/09/2021 08:16

Lots of clean people here so I will say I massively struggle. My energy gets spent making the big mess and I'm exhausted at the end of the day to tidy it, and then you get used to it.

It's not a skill that I've been taught, or learnt.

GreenTortoise · 03/09/2021 08:22

I have a 2 year old and I let him play with his toys as he wishes. Usually they're everywhere but toys are a clean mess so once he is napping I put them all away and again before bedtime.

I am a clean freak as well though so house gets cleaned daily and I don't like having a full washing basket so they get done regularly too.

EatYourVegetables · 03/09/2021 08:23

3yo and 5yo here.

Kitchen clean (dishwasher run, sides wiped, table wiped, any obvious food bits under the table swiped). Clothes all in the correct piles (to wear again tomorrow or in the wash, jackets and shoes in the under-stairs cupboard).

I don’t hoover and clean the fucking bathroom every day because Jesus Christ no. The cleaner comes weekly and does the bathroom, floors etc.

I would like the kids to put away the toys every evening but it’s not happening and I usually can’t be bothered. We probably need a declutter of toys but as it would be my job or nobody’s, it’s nobody’s.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/09/2021 08:24

I used to have a few big wicker baskets I use to scoop toys into at the end of the day just to get hem out of the way.

I was super tidy when ds was little but less so now he's an adult ,I seem to have relaxed a bit. Still like a very tidy house though and tidy as I go.

feb2022 · 03/09/2021 08:34

I have 2 & 3 year olds (in December) and the toys are a nightmare!
I spend most of my day cleaning up after them, I brush & hoover every day and usually give it a good mop around when they go to bed
All the other jobs are literally when I get a minute to do them 😂
I put the toys away and they follow me getting them back out again... I think I need to invest in one I can lock 🤔
I'm 15 weeks pregnant so the exhaustion plays a large factor in how much I can get done, I love reading these threads tho! Seems to give me a much needed kick up the arse 🤣

MargaretThursday · 03/09/2021 08:35

Tidy? 🤣🤣🤣

leavesthataregreen · 03/09/2021 08:37

Similar to you except when DC were small I did a 15 minute toy tidy every evening because I couldn't relax sitting down in the living space with toys all over the floor.

OldTinHat · 03/09/2021 08:46

I live alone. Sometimes my house is so very neat, other times it's like a hand grenade went off in a craft supply warehouse!

Tinpotspectator · 03/09/2021 08:55

I tend towards the neater but the coffee table and one space in the kitchen can get cluttered. We vacuum daily but the hard floors about twice a week. I'm more concerned about kitchen cleanliness than the rest. We are not looking for a show home vibe, although I do have a sneaky paint obsession.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 03/09/2021 09:01

I clean the kitchen after I’ve cooked dinner and load the dishwasher. I have laminate floors so they a get a quick sweep and once a week I’ll mop them. Bathroom gets a wipe down every evening.

I try to keep the house tidy and clean enough that I wouldn’t be embarrassed if someone popped by.

Meruem · 03/09/2021 09:47

When my DC were young, once they were mobile and able, they tidied their own toys in the evening. They did this from 18mths/2 yrs onwards. I had a couple of big boxes under the stairs. So the routine was I’d wash up from dinner while they put toys away, then bath/bed routine. That was many years ago now though!

I do currently have adult DC here (temporarily) but the house stays pretty tidy. One thing I no longer do is clean after dinner. I like being able to eat, then just sit and relax. So I’ll just stick my plate etc in the kitchen. I wfh so for me it’s easier/preferable to just have one tidy round every morning. That’s when the dishwasher goes on. Hoover, mop as required, etc. I don’t really have evening visitors, not that I have many day ones either! So it’s fine. Other jobs I fit in during work time (my work is very flexible) as it also gives me a screen time break.

My place isn’t always spotless, but never so bad that I couldn’t let someone see it.

Babyghirl · 03/09/2021 10:18

Boombadoom · 03/09/2021 10:20

Immaculate downstairs at some point during the day, not constant though. I Hoover daily, mop twice a week, kids toys are in the playroom so it keeps it tidy.

Several days where the bathroom is a mess, a few days where the bedroom has washing to be put away etc. It’s always clean.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 03/09/2021 10:21

Beds aired for a couple of hours, then made. Kitchen surfaces wiped down and cleaned after every meal, dishwasher run after every meal.

Washing machine goes every day (there are 5 of us), sitting room tidied every day, sofa cushions plumped most days in there and kitchen.

I can't bear mess and even less dirt, so our kitchen is pretty spotless. Our cleaner comes once a week and I also mop the floors at least once a week.
