How tidy do you get your house every day?

I wouldn't naturally be the most tidy person and my husband is probably tidier than average.

Tell me honestly what your standards are? I have 2 kids, 3 and 5. I take contracts, this year through choice I was off for 12 weeks over summer.

I make sure that I do all the cooking (lunch, snacks, dinner but he makes porridge in the morning) and 100% of the laundry. I make sure that the dishwasher is loaded sides wiped down. I wouldn't always sweep the floor or mop more than twice a week. We do have a cleaner who does a weekly deep clean weekly.

There would be a lot of toys everywhere downstairs but I have often run out of steam before I tidy them...

Generally total chaos and need a significant amount of time to prepare for any visitors. Try to get the kitchen to ground zero over the weekend but doesn’t always happen. 5 kids, mind.

I also tidy in evenings after kids have gone to bed, but we do have too many toys so need a declutter. Everyday:

  • beds made
  • 1-2 loads laundry washed, dried and folded (some of it ends up staying in the clean basket)
  • dishwasher run once or twice
  • downstairs swept
  • kitchen wiped down
  • toilets bleached and wiped
  • glass smears on back door wiped

Once a week:

  • bathrooms cleaned
  • upstairs hoovered

I used to think we were "below average" in terms of tidiness but as I get to know other local parents more and visit them more often, I've found this is not the case. I felt so much better when I saw my friend's washing drying in the kitchen, a few bowls out and some crumbs on the floor. I know I shouldn't but I get very anxious about what people think of my tidiness/house cleanliness possibly because I have passive aggressive family members...

I'm exhausted reading this.
I wish I was the kind of person who couldn't go to bed until the house was tidy Grin.
The evening is my time to chill so if there are still jobs needing done they have to wait.
My standards are generally kitchen and bathroom clean, no overflowing bins. Windows and doors are open everyday, partly for dogs to wander in and out freely, but also to keep the house fresh.

However, some days it's the old "All fed, none dead". I cba to stress to much over cleaning..and I take my Granny's wonderful advice, the house will be there when you aren't and visitors come to see you, not your house (and if they do they can get knotted!).

@Ellarain

I clean the whole house everyday. Everywhere is hoovered and mopped. No dirty dishes, laundry washed folded and put away. I keep on top of it so really only takes 30 minutes in the morning before school run. Some cleaning up after we have dinner. I do a deep clean on a Thursday, change beds, clean fridge and kitchen presses, wash all skirting boards and doors, bleach the bathroom tiles, clean windows inside and out. I love my home and I'm happy when it's clean and tidy.

Genuine question but how dirty can those skirting boards be after a week ? I'd be worried about warping the wood with that much cleaning.

@Handsoffstrikesagain

user I do a quick wipe on all downstairs skirting at least every other day. I have spaniels and labs and their hair gets everywhere!

Wow. Impressive. Think I'll Hoover mine once it hits 10.00 am. I've got 10 more minutes of reading this thread to fire me up 🤣

Ellarain · 04/09/2021 11:02

@userxx, I live in a very old Georgian house so it can get quite dusty. The skirting boards are fine so far. Smile

You'd probably be able to eat your dinner off them!! Mine on the other, not so much.

AnneTwackie
Clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy. The people I enjoy visiting most don’t keep their houses like show homes so I try not to care, more important to enjoy my family. If it were my last day on earth I would be gutted to have spent it cleaning!

@AnneTwackie I love your attitude Smile

Tidying my house varies depending on how I feel. Sometimes I’m just too tired or busy or my back hurts and so I do the bare minimum. Sometimes I get in this mood where I want to really freshen up the place or get organised or rearrange things because I want a change so I get super organised throw stuff away, wash the walls, put flowers in a vase. House looks wonderful then less than 2 hrs later there are toys and bits and pieces everywhere and I just feel tired and a bit resigned to it.

Most of the time there are toys and craft projects and bits and pieces stacked here and there so pretty untidy. Over and over I am teaching dd to put her things back where they belong when she’s finished playing with them. ‘But mummy I’m not finished playing with them’ or she’s set up a creative play scene and doesn’t want to wreck it. So, I’m learning to live with it and let go of my dream of a Marie Kondo style house.

I get my dad's house perfect, but really struggle with my own. I'm on Swedish Death Cleaning, now. Craft items are next.
