to think that peeing gallons of blood & having a fever is an emergency?

I've a history of urinary tract infections progressing to kidney infections since I was about 3 years old. 18 years ago I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, but following treatment it has been in remission since then.

After an extremely stressful life experience I had what I thought was yet another urinary tract infection but yesterday it progressed to blood literally pouring out of me whenever I urinate, and I'm having to urinate at least once every 20 minutes. During the night I counted the number of times I had to get up to pee it was 21 times. And each time I peed blood my urine is quite intense red, and it is EXCRUCIATINGLY painful. I am shivering and sweating. I called 111 and they told me a "local service" would call me back. The local service was this awful rude woman who told me to just drink lots of water and to try to get a GP appointment later this year and just kept asking me if I have friends and a support system. She was so rude and eventually hung up on me.

The last time I had these symptoms I ended up with a serious kidney infection and hospitalised for several days. Clearly I need antibiotics.
Am I to just sit here getting progressively more ill?

Bloody hell op that sounds dreadful. I honestly think I would consider a&e with your history. Is there anyone who could take you?
Can you at least get a call with the GP? Or even a private GP?

Can you get in touch with your gp or walk in centre? Sounds like you definitely need antibiotics. 111 are crap. Hope you recover soon, uti's are horrible.

Go to A&E, you don't need 111's permission. They're bloody useless a lot of the time.

I'm not one to suggest a and e lightly, but this is deserving of a and e imo, particularly having tried local services who have been unable/unwilling to provide an alternative care pathway. Hope you get the treatment you need soon!

Go to A&E now! When feeling better complain about the person you spoke to on 111, shocking attitude and behaviour, cant believe they hung up! Hopefully the conversation was recorded and can be followed up

GP surgery never answers the phone. This is nothing new, they've always been like that

The horrible woman from 111 has now called me back to offer to try to get me a GP appointment. I think she must have realised quite how rude and unhelpful she was.

Yes - no doubt a&e is the sensible option....Utis can turn serious very quickly without treatment.

I should hope so, you're at a real risk of sepsis the shivering being indicative of fever. This should be dealt with in person. I would bypass GP and go to A&E you wouldn't be turned away for those symptoms

Did the 111 operator know your history? You need to see a urologist urgently as blood in your urine could indicate a recurrence of your bladder cancer. If you were able to get a GP appointment urgently, I would not say this is an A&E situation, but in your shoes I would go to A&E if that's what it takes. Some areas have a self-referral urology one-stop service, which would be better still.

And even so, better a few hours in a&e than days at home waiting for the GP.
