I think there will be a fairly major re-set of how people think about leisure travel. Not all existing firms will survive, and I think large ship cruises could well be vulnerable to change in preferences

But the overall demand for holidays is likely to recover, and those people who not longer cruise will holiday elsewhere and jobs will change accordingly

I have insider info on this. DH works for one of the cruise companies. They are indeed in the shit and may well not recover. They have taken a huge financial hit and are not planning ahead with any coherent plans to recover. DH has been saying for some time now that cruises will soon become something that is thought badly of, for environmental reasons. This crisis may well just speed up that process.
Luckily for us DH has another non cruise related job to go to. Not so lucky for those working in the industry, especially the thousands of crew currently floating around on ships with nowhere to dock and no job.

I live in NZ. These hulking great cruise ships think it's totally fine to come storming in with 1000 passengers aboard and park up in some of the most beautiful, unspoilt landscapes on earth. At the same time disgorging effluent into fjords with endangered or endemic species whilst also disgorging their 1000 humans into pleasure boats with their packed lunches that get chucked into the sea or dumped at the waters edge.

I'm also hoping that we will all reassess our travel options in the future. Do we really need to fly so often for business trips given that virtual options are so good/free/environmentally friendly? Things we have in the past maintained to be 'essential' have actually turned out to be not so. Also I hope businesses will enable WFH more freely now they see that people can be productive at home.

People see cruises as a more eco friendly way to travel than planes but they are not. Ships use a certain type of oil that is too dirty to use anywhere else and cause some of the worst pollution especially in port cities.

Tourism is a wonderful industry in many ways and our economies will suffer without it but it's not cost free. This virus has just highlighted how harmful many forms of global travel can be. We do need to rethink how we travel, and this crisis has forced that to happen. It will cost jobs - but this will be a global recession, many sectors will be damaged, not just travel.

The new ships have actually been designed with cleaner fuel as their fuel source. Obviously it will take time for it to come into use fully though.

Cruises have long been high on my list of holidays never to take. I've never seen the appeal of travelling in a floating plague pit but accept that others enjoy them. They're hugely popular. They might take a hit until later this year but they won't be going away.

We were talking about this, the way cruise ship passengers have been treated would absolutely make me reconsider ever getting on one. I'd be very surprised if they didn't suffer irreversible damage.

This situation with Covid 19 may resolve, but in reality it's just highlighted that in situations like this countries can and will refuse to offer help to passengers, and you are incredibly vulnerable.

I think there are a number of industries like aviation and cruise ships that should have been about to see a day of reckoning because of unsustainable climate emissions and I hope we can use this as an opportunity to bring that forward, but provide proper support to staff who need help to retrain/find other industries.

I looked into cruises a few years ago, thinking it could be a good way of travel with a small child and potentially less harmful than flying. Couldn't believe the level of damage they do, carbon, pollution, and lots of cities say they are incredibly harmful for tourism as they bring no boost to people staying, often don't even eat in places they're visiting, just come, cause damage and leave.

My family as a whole have been on many many many cruises and crossings and never picked up so much as a sneeze. My parents live for their cruises. I'm not a great sailor so not so keen when they move but enjoy being on them. So don't worry, we'll keep Cunard in business for a long time yet.

They are popular with disabled and very elderly people because travelling abroad if you are a full time wheelchair user or fairly immobile is so difficult. Lots of countries are very poor on accessibility. These people will still want cruises as the other option is not to go abroad.
