Sainsburys: stopping plastic bag delivery

wink1970 · 25/09/2019 16:23

I just received an email from Sainsburys (who I have a delivery pass for, so that's a fee that I won't get back!), saying they are stopping using plastic bags for deliveries.

This is why I stopped using Tesco.

~ I don't want a delivery man coming in to the house, especially not with heavy crates - one of our floor tiles is cracked as a result of trying that once.
~ I don't want to rush around transferring groceries from a crate to something in the house
~ I don't want to carry items an armful at a time into the kitchen.

AIBU? I recycle every single bag they bring and I happily pay the extra charge.

You can pay for them. My delivery cost me 40p extra today as I wanted bags.

Just buy some of the big bags and have them ready for your delivery.
Usually the driver will help you transfer everything over on your doorstep. I do this and it takes a couple of minutes, it’s so easy.

Asda recently did this. I unpack it into an empty laundry basket and children's wagon at the front door. I've occasionally been caught without an empty washing basket Grin in which case I shove it all into whatever bags are in the cupboard already.

Blows my mind that they ever delivered in plastic bags at all

Yabvu

Transfer it into bags or boxes at the door. Simple.

Great news!

What bloody said. We have to do this as our kitchen is in the cellar.
It's really not a big deal.

As for if you’re being unreasonable - yes, of course. Very. Your wants are not more important than the needs of the planet 🤷‍♀️ Especially when you’re just being a bit lazy to be honest - I struggle to feel sorry for you having to carry your own shopping from the front door to the kitchen in, say, a box rather than a plastic bag

Yes YABU. Its the way things should go and its hardly a big deal to transfer it into something else. The delivery guy will even do it for you on the doorstep.

Your slight inconvenience doesn't outweigh our need to get rid of plastic waste. Talk about a first world problem.

I swapped from Tesco a few weeks back because of this and now Sainsburys are doing it. I am disabled so it's a bit of an inconvenience.

I will need to think of another plan, as most of the supermarkets are the same.

I chuck it on the stairs to be honest and then sort it when the delivery driver has gone. If you have issues carrying stuff can you use a laundry basket, or bring some bags to the door? It's not like the delivery driver is going to come into your home and start unpacking it into the cupboards just as it's not in bags Confused

You are being unreasonable. However the supermarket is too. You feel rushed because they introduced this new policy without giving delivery people any additional time for the deliveries. Obviously it will take longer unpacking each item compared to unpacking by bag load.

Gah you're the second one of these in as many days. The other was a right whiner who shot down every suggestion so I won't bother except to say you're ridiculous for wanting to use bags for a distance of about 12ft and about 10 seconds, unless you live in a palace of course, think of the impact and stop being so bloody lazy and awkward

Celebelly · 25/09/2019 16:36

YABU. They're all going to be doing it soon and rightly so. We have a few big canvas bags for life and we just decant the stuff in. There's no need to rush as they don't bring six crates at once, they generally bring a couple and go back to the van to sort the rest so it's easy just to quickly transfer.

This is the definition of a first world problem, except there's actually a legitimate reason behind it!

Oh come on really?

The planet and the environment are suffering and you want plastic? Just to avoid someone coming into your house doing their job?

Just set boxes down by the door on delivery day and use those. The planet needs less plastic being produced, it's so wasteful.

Big ikea type bags and we empty the crates at the door. What will you do when all online supermarkets deliver without carrier bags?

Aside from some of the weirder stuff on this other thread, there are some decent suggestions of how to handle bagless stuff.

ASDA did this too and its really inconvenient the drivers moan about it too.

I used to pay the extra and reuse the plastic bags so they weren't going to waste such as in bins for for emptying litter from the litter tray.

Now I have to buy plastic bags from elsewhere to do this!

Or maybe Google some alternatives to plastic bags? For jobs such as rubbish and cat litter?

I get cartboard boxes with the delivery. I can give them back or keep them. I don't like when they use plastic bags. At least with Morrisons we could give them back.

We whack our delivery into a couple of laundry baskets and then sort it from there.

Switch to another online supermarket then if it's such a vital issue

@bunnypenny you can now, but they are stopping it.

OK hear you all loud & clear, thanks for the feedback.

I'm not going to start transferring 6-8 crates (and sorry @Noroof it is a lot further than 12 ft, so enjoy your smirking) so I will look into alternatives.

NB I am an avid recycler and otherwise avoid plastic. I re-use these bags. Hey Ho.

Edit to be clear: transferring 6-8 crates armful by armful, so will look at alternative ways of transferring.
