Sainsburys: stopping plastic bag delivery

wink1970 · 25/09/2019 16:23

I just received an email from Sainsburys (who I have a delivery pass for, so that's a fee that I won't get back!), saying they are stopping using plastic bags for deliveries.

This is why I stopped using Tesco.

~ I don't want a delivery man coming in to the house, especially not with heavy crates - one of our floor tiles is cracked as a result of trying that once.
~ I don't want to rush around transferring groceries from a crate to something in the house
~ I don't want to carry items an armful at a time into the kitchen.

AIBU? I recycle every single bag they bring and I happily pay the extra charge.

Keep some reusable bags by the door and get the driver to help you put everything in them when it arrives. It won't take more than two minutes.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 25/09/2019 17:04

Switch to Ocado.... they refuse to go bagless....

AntiHop · 25/09/2019 17:23

What do you mean by you recycle the bags? You put them in the recycling, or you reuse them?

Recycling plastic isn't good enough. A lot of what gets put in recycling doesn't actually get recycled. And it still takes energy and resources to recycle. The better answer is reduction in use.

We haven't used plastic bags for sainsburys deliveries since we started using them 5 years ago. We still get the odd bag from them when we get cleaning products or frozen products, which they bag. This, plus the other odd bag from shops here and there, is enough to use as a bin bag for our rubbish. We put very little in our rubbish as we compost food waste and recycle. We probably only throw away one sainsburys size bag of rubbish a week. Sometimes two.

HelenaDove · 25/09/2019 17:33

The other thread @Noroof is referring to was started by an OP with OCD. Thats what she has omitted to say on this thread Instead she has called that OP a right whiner . Snide much?

WhatshouldIdonoww · 25/09/2019 17:37

I’m with you op. It’s ok if you have a small shop but when it’s 8/9 crates it is very annoying, even the Tesco’s driver was saying it wasn’t a stupid idea and was moaning about it the last time I ordered.

wink1970 · 25/09/2019 17:38

@ AntiHop we re-use them as bin liners, to put 'stuff' in etc. When they get ripped I recycle them. Like many, I also compost and put out 1 x half black bag a week, mostly what the council won't recycle and I haven't been able to avoid.

@HelenaDove yes I read it just now! I don't mind being sneered at, but think that other lady deserved better given her circumstances.

YABU. Large companies like supermarkets have an obligation to sort out their packaging. You have a responsibility to support that.

Plastic can be recycled a maximum of 7 times (dependent on the type of plastic- I suspect bags would be less than this) before they degrade into microplastics and can no longer be used. Recycling is not an answer when it comes to plastic.

PositiveVibez · 25/09/2019 17:42

Yabu. Surely everyone has a drawer/cupboard full of plastic bags.

Just take them to the front door, take the shopping out the crate and place in plastic bag.

It will add a minute or 2 to your delivery.

I am made up supermarkets are stopping them with deliveries.

OtraCosaMariposa · 25/09/2019 17:44

Well done Sainsbury's!

Recycling only comes after reduce and reuse. It's SO simple to come up with alternatives which suit you. Nobody needs single use plastic bags. At all.

WonderTweek · 25/09/2019 17:45

I'm all for shops getting rid of plastic bags, but I must admit I was a bit nervy when Tesco did it. In the end I stocked up on those sturdy Sainsbury's self scan bags and now keep them by the door and just whack all of my shopping in those when it arrives. It takes a bit longer than before, but it's really not bad. I think it is a great idea and all of the Tesco drivers I have spoken to agreed that it's about time they banned plastic bags.

DA1115 · 25/09/2019 17:49

Tesco did this a while ago. The delivery drivers are usually patient enough to wait for you to take your shopping in. We manage it.

The lady over the road from me has her shopping deliverered. She had massive bags ready at the door and dumps her shopping in to take is through to the kitchen.

ethelfleda · 25/09/2019 17:50

Yes, YABU.

NotMeNoNo · 25/09/2019 17:51

Can you not transfer the shopping into reusable bags at the door ? Or carry the crate into the kitchen and unload onto your table? Sorry if I missed that somewhere.

Excepting people with disabilities or extremely small homes it can't be an insurmountable problem. We are all going to have to get a bit more resourceful.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 25/09/2019 17:59

we re-use them as bin liners, to put 'stuff' in etc.

So you're still sending them to landfill. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I have about 8 crates for my weekly shop, I just unload it all in to the hall and put it away from there. Total amount of time actually added to the job is utterly negligible.

CountSnackula · 25/09/2019 18:07

We've been having shopping delivered from them (Sainsbury's) for about four years and I've always chosen bagless deliveries because I can't justify having plastic bags to carry shopping six feet from the door to the kitchen. Excepting special circumstances (disability, although arguably this should oblige the delivery drivers to take the shopping into the kitchen for them), I cannot understand why people think that their convenience is more important than the fact that we're choking the planet in plastic.

Get bags for life. Keep them by the door when the delivery's due. Transfer items to bags. Transfer bags to kitchen. Simple.

And, FWIW, I've never had a delivery driver who minded waiting for me to move our shopping from the crates to my hall floor. Even when I was heavily pregnant and incredibly slow and cumbersome (and had refused their offer of help) they were always patient and cheerful.

You know plastic bags can’t be recycled right? You can re use them

Whattodoabout · 25/09/2019 18:19

Buy a few Ikea bags and have them waiting by the door when they arrive. I love my Ikea bags, they’re humongous and strong.

hazeyjane · 25/09/2019 18:24

I get a massive order every few weeks. The delivery driver leaves the crates by the back or front door. I have a big stack of reusable bags which I have waiting. I put the stuff in the bags and line them up in the corridor. When delivery is done I carry the bags through to the kitchen and unpack. I don't see what is so difficult?

Stinkycatbreath · 25/09/2019 18:39

YABVU the world needs less plastic get several grips and have something ready by the door.

leiaskye · 25/09/2019 19:15

I use Sainsburys & haven’t had bags for ages now. The delivery drivers don’t come into the house.

They put the crates in the porch doorway & I carry them one at a time into the kitchen. Empty them onto the worktop & take them back. Only takes a few minutes.

I get annoyed they still wrap pre-packed meat in plastic bags, & when I do go to the shop I ask them not to.

Greenleaveslaughing · 25/09/2019 22:26

I think it’s a pain, I just received the email too. I recycle my bags, lots are made out of recycled material. Why can’t they usepaper bags, or recycled ones?.
It’s a damn pain to be honest, barking dog, in kitchen, house usually in uproar, and having to unload shopping into bags.
I have no spare time, which is why it’s delivered..I have no time for this faff.

Greenleaveslaughing · 25/09/2019 22:27

I guess Ikea bags it is. That’s the best idea I’ve read, I Sumerian’s everyone else must get about 2 things delivered, as I get lots and all the heavy stuff.

If you really don't want him/her coming into the house, have you considered a shopping trolley like the ones our mums used in the olden days. I think you can still get them in that fetching tartan they used to come in.
