Anti-Semitism and the British Left

Here they go again. Why does the British Left have such an antisemitism problem?

Labour fringe speaker's Holocaust remarks spark new antisemitism row

A senior Labour MP has said he is shocked at some of the anti-Semitic tweets by party members that come before its disciplinary panel. John Cryer said some of what is written "makes your hair stand up", adding: "This stuff is redolent of the 1930s."

After the Chakrabarti whitewash, I'm not listening to anything Corbyn and the left have to say any more. And don't even get me started on Ken Livingstone. I'll never trust Labour or the left ever again, until they stand up and say, "We allowed anti-semitism to arise within Labour. We just went,'deny, deny, deny' and looked the other way. We were wrong". Then, and only then, will I ever give them the time of day once again.

I doubt it is just coincidental that anti-semitism has only reared its ugly head of late, since Corbyn took over as leader of the Labour party. I'm not saying there was none at all before then, but that was when it got bad. Did you see, a few months back, a Liberal Democrat MP with anti-semitic views started shooting his mouth off? LibDem leader at the time, Tim Farron just turned around and fired him, immediately. That's leadership. Corbyn, on the other hand, has let Labour party anti-semites run riot and basically done nothing. He didn't even deal decisively with Livingstone, who should have been banned from Labour ten times over by now.

Corbyn has damaged forever Labour's reputation as a non-racist party. It took decades to build up that reputation, and just one world class muppet to ruin it.

YANBU.

They go on about racism towards non-white British (muslims, Europeans) yet ......

I was a staunch Labour supporter for years.

For many reasons _Jesus Corbyn being the main one, I will not vote for them until:
1- this anti-semitism stops.
2) someone else is leader.
3) Brexits over and dnoen with.

Yet millions of people still follow them.

ALL parties have their MASSIVE faults, btw, but Labour seem to be getting away with too much.

No idea. Unfortunately there are many, many Mumsnetters who think that Jeremy Corbyn is god-like, the best thing since sliced bread and not be be criticsed under ANY circumstances, so don't expect a reasoned debate.

Even high profile former Labour supporters like JK Rowling are turning away from the "personality cult". Personally I'm hoping to see a breakaway party formed by the more centrist Labour members. I'd vote for that (maybe) but there is no way on earth that I'd ever vote for Corbyn and his Union cronies.

I wouldn't vote for him either he's weak and irritating and the policies would be wonderful if we had a magic money tree. We don't and the economy would be wreaked again by labour.

I can't vote Tory they have spiteful and nasty policies.

Clearly the lib Dems are a bloody joke.

Completely stuffed.

As someone who is Jewish I find it horrific that they are not held to account for this. Also I think it's their method to attract minority groups such as the muslims who don't like Jews. It also attracts far right/left nut jobs. It's all about the votes. How the heck it's allowed shocks and disgusts me.

I was at conference. Pretty toxic for anyone who isn't a corbynista - really poisonous for Jewish non-Corbynistas - there's an underlying thread of mob rule. Nothing good will come of this.

And those causing the trouble are overwhelmingly white and middle class wannabe revolutionaries. The working class people I've seen tend to be less keen on St Jeremy.

I think it's also a mistake to think that the Muslims don't like Jews. There are probably a few who would be impressed by the goings on at conference, but the average UK Muslim has the same concerns as his or her Jewish counterpart, and it's only the Corbynistas and those out to cause trouble who think that they will gain Muslim votes through anti-semitism. Most Muslims would probably be worried that they are to be in the next tumbrill.

Can anyone detail what this anti Semitism has entailed. I keep hearing that people are angry about it, but have no clue what has ever been said and by who.

sam I agree that it's a mistake. I have a lot of friends who are Muslim. We are all horrified with what is going on. My Muslim friend made a comment about Jews being the focus because the base of the current labour leadership is white middle class and that it reminded them of the start of Hilter.

YANBU I will not vote labour again until the anti-semitism stops. The hard left are misogynistic and anti-Semetic, I don't understand why.

That is good to hear Supermum, all i ever hear and read is there is a huge problem between muslims and jews.

is this all down to Palestine or does it stretch back centuries?

It seems Labour are more concered about getting the 'minority ethnic' vote than the 'working class' vote i thought they stood for?

I have voted Tory the last 2/3 elections and will continue to do so if this is the direction Labour are going in.

I had the same question as Yvette, read th links, and still don't really get it.

Denying the holocaust seems like pure stupidity to me, not racism. Of course it shouldn't be tolerated, but I'm not sure it should be credited as a valid opinion either, and reacting so strongly against it does just that, instead of just seeing it for the stupidity that it is. Denial could come from racism, but equally, it could just come from being a fool.

Blubeau thanks for the link. I did already have a vague idea that something had once been said at a fringe meeting. But the furore seems very strong. What else has been said? Any more links?

No, trust me: it's racism.

I find it all really confusing. I'm a Lib Dem member, not Labour, but I tend to see Labour as 'the good guys' in major politics generally and I don't understand why they would want to be anti semitic. It doesn't fit with the general rhetoric of the left at all.

I have a friend who works for the Labour party who is a non-Corbynite Jew (well she's an atheist but she's ethnically Jewish). I know she was flat out at the conference but I haven't had a chance to catch up with her about any difficulties.

blue the 'divide' goes way back. Back to before Jesus was born. The divide between the christians and Jews started with Jesus. King Herold was Jewish and wanted Jesus dead.... for a reason. Jesus was here from God to save us from ourselves. The Jews were in charge until Jesus showed up.

Most people have moved on over the last 2017 years, some, including the Labour Party leadership have not.

I think the problem is twofold, those using criticism of Israel as a front for viscous anti Semitism and on the other hand defenders of Israel tarring those raising valid concerns about the actions of the state of Israel as anti-Semitic when they're no such thing.

Completely agree. If Labour want to have a hope in hell of ever being in government again they need to start appealing to the "middle england" voter who is totally turned off by the idiotic chanting and extreme policies.
