I know it's bad form to point it out in the midst of someone else's distress, but seriously, am I the only one who has noticed it?

"your defiantly wrong"
"have you considered councilling"
"their going to take over"
"alot of people don't bother"

I'm not expecting Samuel Pepys but seriously, I find it difficult to respond as the wider point is lost amidst the terrible writing!

I type well on my laptop with a proper keyboard and badly on my phone with a temperamental autocorrect and where I can't see what I've typed.

Sorry. Didn't realise it was a hanging offence.

99% of posters have noticed it and don't find it too AWFUL.

I agree op. I've noticed a trend recently to say the exact opposite of what was intended with people expected to use context to decipher it. Some posts are just gibberish
It goes beyond typos and autocorrect. Some posts (for whatever reason) are completely incomprehensible.

Some of it will be autocorrect.

There's plenty of times when I've typed something, hit post, and only then realised that autocorrect has "corrected" my words into something incorrect. Such as "correcting" definitely to defiantly, for example.

YABU.

Oh, come on! Yes, phones are responsible for autocorrect - which is often bizarre and sometimes very funny, but they do not turn 'a lot' into 'alot'!

Conceded, defiantly might have been an autocorrect bloop but not were/where and your/you're. That's just bad grammar.

YABU.

Usually the spelling and grammar is very good on MN (of course, lots of people use their phones and tablets etc so there are some obvious autocorrect faux-pas).

Compared to the rest of the Internet I find that MN is one of the most pedantic for spelling etc.

That said, does it really matter?

Report
JacquesHammer · 19/04/2017 16:18

as the wider point is lost amidst the terrible writing

Seriously?? The wider point is lost because someone types "your" instead of "you're".

Nonsense. Utter nonsense.

The issue with MN I think is that there's no edit button. People tend to type quickly otherwise the thread moves on and their point isn't relevant.

Meh.

What a pathetic post. Most of us have busy lives dear and are posting between multi tasking. Most are on phones and rushing.

Maybe get a hobby?

Makes me laugh.

auto correct causes a lot of problems - especially all the "ducking" going on! 🦆

I love the one about putting bowels in the sink.

And sometimes people mis-state so eloquently that you have to admire them.

I don't mind it on here so much, but for some reason it bothers me a lot on facebook. I'm astounded at how many can't spell.

Some people are are on phones, others may not be confident in English and some may be stressed and busy. But better to kick someone, perhaps save the marking skills for the exam boards.

YABU. I typo a lot and do not always proofread posts. The general message is usually understood even with an out of place letter

Everything before the but is bullshit op.

You might want to bear that in mind next time you're typing on here. It'll make your op a lot shorter.

And, if you find the comprehension lost in the examples you have given, it is you that is the problem. Those examples, whilst incorrect, are easy to understand.
