Mushy peas should be illegal and there's something very wrong with anyone who would eat them. Peas are the most wonderful things and should be left as the glorious orbs they are. Imo.

I was initially with you op. It instinctively felt wrong for Christmas day.

But the more I thought about it. The more I thought why not? They are scummy. And roast potatoes are quite like chips. And now I want chips and mushy peas. Although this may have more to do with the fact that I haven't had breakfast yet

I don't want to get into veg variety geek mode here, [years too late for that love] but there are specific peas that are grown for fresh [the glorious obs of which you speak], those which are marrowfat and for mushing, and even others which are for drying, and for use during the winter in stews etc eg the Latvian Pea. Plus others such as the Eat All pea which can be used as Mange Tout [which means Eat All], and Sugar Snap which are a rounded mange tout. The Mange tout can be eaten as a pod because the pod is not all mealy [which occurs in 'normal' peas], but also left for the peas inside.

Very versatile, the pea.

This will totally out me but we have Hawaiian salad with ours. It's a mixture of crushed pineapple, desiccated coconut, sour cream and marshmallows. Yes, you read that right. On the turkey.
