Adults on scooters

I keep seeing grown adults using scooters to get around.

As long as they are careful around others I don't see a problem. Same as kids on scooters. In fact kids are more annoying because they don't always notice what's going on around them.

We have a lady in her late 80s using one near where i used to live. Always makes me smile and great way for her to travel. Shes known by everyone now. Yabu.

I agree. Round here it's nearly always very self-consciously fashionable hipster men. I always wonder what they are doing playing with a child's toy. Having said that, I recently saw a dad and two young sons all with scooters on an outing together - actually quite sweet.

Lots of the parents at DS's school scoot their DC's scooters home. It looks like great fun, especially scooting down the hill.

I am too fat and unfit to to trust myself on a scooter, I wish I could!

I know what you mean but I can't get worked up about it. It is obviously fun for them, they aren't doing any harm and I would prefer people use any mode of transport other than a car (where possible). So I think YABU.

Thing is, I only ever see them around London on busy pavements or scooting through busy stations and have seen so many fall off or crash into people.

Bloody scooters, terrible inventions. I think adults do look pretty silly on them, very 'look at me, I'm so hip/eccentric/free spirited'. So sick of people bumping into me with them (children and adults alike).

I care because they're on the pavement but moving significantly fast than foot traffic.

I use a scooter sometimes because I need it to keep up with my 3yo on his balance bike. I normally have strict rules about him staying close to me on his bike but when we go to my parents the route is 95% inside pavement cycle lanes, with a railing between the pavement and the road, so I allow him to cut loose and go as fast as he wants. I can't keep up with him then and even though it's a safe route I don't want him going too far out of my sight, so I have to scoot or cycle with him. And it's not always practical to bring my bike.

They are an absolute menace on the pavements in central London weaving in and out of pedestrians. They go unbelievably fast and it gives you a shock when they come up behind you then swerve past at speed.

I use my scooter so I can keep up with the kids and know they're safe. It's preferable to shouting at them every 30 seconds to slow down or not to go too far ahead. They'd be as well to walk if they're not allowed to scoot faster than I can walk/run so it's easier (and much more fun!) if we all scoot together. I'm in London but super aware of others on the pavement and never feel like I own the path. I love mine!

DH used to think the exact same thing - then we went to Decathlon together, he picked one up and spent the entire shopping trip scooting around the store in glee! It's a really fun way to travel. I've just bought him one for his 30th birthday, he LOVES it! We don't even have DC, so there's literally no excuse other than it's fun and practical.

NB DH is always extremely careful of other road and pavement users!

If my dc ride theirs to school i scoot it back home.

It's easier than quicker than carrying/walking with the bloody thing bashing into my ankles.

I have no problem with small children using them on the pavement, I understand its much safer for them. However I'd expect adults and teenagers to use the road, as I would cyclists. Even at a relatively low speed of 10 mph, being hit by full-sized person will hurt.

This is so very very weird. Why are scooters and skateboards not considered ok (by judgemental people like the OP) but bicycles are?

I mean, I can see that using a space hopper might be a bit "look at me, I'm so kooky" but really, a scooter? And just saying "they look like twats" is not an explanation at all!

Is it part of the prejudice against people who are active? Or just the usual anyone who chooses differently from the majority must be wrong and an egocentric twat?
