To not want my name advertised on my coffee cup?

I get that Starbucks thinks it's a nice friendly thing to do, but surely you should be able to opt out if you're a grumpy old woman like me ?

Yesterday when the cashier said 'can I have your name for the cup please?' I said 'I'd rather not'. She was fine with this, took my money and passed the cup on to the barista. I was the only person waiting, but the barista asked my name 'for the cup' again. He insisted that he needed a name 'to avoid confusion', and went on to say 'it's company policy, dear'. Hmm

He decided to call me 'A' on my cup, made my coffee and then handed it to me.

AIBU to not want my (generally mis-spelled, even though it's only 3 letters and I always spell it out) name advertised on my cup? Or should I just amuse myself with made up comedy names?

Yes, I know I can choose to go elsewhere, and often do. I just think it's odd to force someone into a 'customer service experience' that they're not comfortable with.

Just make one up then?

Fatmomma99 · 27/07/2015 16:24

I was going to suggest made up comedy ones. Could you do punning rude ones like on the Simpsons?

BeautyQueenFromMars · 27/07/2015 16:25

Just make up a name. There are websites devoted to the fake names people give at Starbucks.

Try 'He who shall not be named'... Grin

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 27/07/2015 16:25

They can be bollocked if they don't follow procedure. Just make a fantasy coffee name up and enjoy yourself.

FarFromAnyRoad · 27/07/2015 16:26

I think it's ridiculous too - but I also think that the brownish liquid that Starbucks dare to call coffee is something that should be referred to the Trades Descriptions people!
However - there are no rules on this one and nowhere does it say you have to give your real name.
If I were a Starbucks customer I'd name myself Eyma Knobgobbler or Mike Hunts-Abelter - then have a nice childish snurk when it was called out!

QueenQueenie · 27/07/2015 16:26

YABU going to Starbucks at all. The coffee is shit (imo) and the employees always look miserable.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/07/2015 16:27

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Real Name.

Suefla62 · 27/07/2015 16:27

Good grief you're way over thinking this. Make one up.

Allbymyselfagain · 27/07/2015 16:27

Then don't give them your name. I have been Laura for 6 months, bored now so im emma. It amuses me how many variations of spelling they give me.

LurkingHusband · 27/07/2015 16:28

People have been known to give the name "UK Taxpayer", in Starbucks.

PurpleDaisies · 27/07/2015 16:28

At least half the fun of going to Starbucks is making up a silly name or seeing how incorrectly they can spell yours.

MrsHathaway · 27/07/2015 16:30

It's a gimmick. The coffee is overpriced, so you're paying for the gimmick.

Like pps said, choose a name that amuses you. I'd be tempted to go for something that might net you a freebie. Lady Salisbury?

DH recently met someone called Agatha-Christie . Just saying.

Zebedee74 · 27/07/2015 16:31

You're right - I need to stop getting irritated and start finding it amusing...or go elsewhere. Perhaps somewhere independent where they might actually give a toss what my name is?

The thing about amusing names is that you could actually end up walking down the street with 'My C*nt' written on your hot beverage. Grin

If you don't want to give your name then that's fair enough, just say the first name that comes into your head. I agree it's a daft policy but the poor sod behind the counter didn't come up with it and they can get into trouble if they don't follow it. Refusing to give a name just puts them in an awkward position and holds up the queue.

Use an alias. I always do that for table reservations or anything that puts my name out in public iyswim.

Fatmomma99 · 27/07/2015 16:35

How about "Starbucks policy is shit"?

MrsHathaway · 27/07/2015 16:36

Do it. Swearier the better Grin

The alternative to Starbucks is surely ... not drinking so much coffee. I don't get the cult of constant coffee.

G1veMeStrength · 27/07/2015 16:36

Tell them it's Nero or Costa.

IReallyAmHephzibah · 27/07/2015 16:37

The one and only time I went into Starbucks they didn't believe me when I told them my actual name Angry and just wrote 'Jane Doe' on my cup!

eggyface · 27/07/2015 16:38

don't see why you can't refuse a name. I know it's not the server's fault but they're the only representative of the company present to whom we can make our views known. I just say 'no, I don't do that!' with a nice smile. if ever I'm in Starbucks which is v rare. I like the taxpayer option tho and would use that if it weren't for the fact that we are enabling them by shopping there.

VulcanWoman · 27/07/2015 16:41

Lurking, nice one 'UK tax payer'.
How did they manage before this stupid idea.
P'd me off the other day, bought a Laptop in Currys/PC World, they said they couldn't proceed with transaction without my name and address!

RonaldosAbs · 27/07/2015 16:41

My name is quite unusual here and people don't know how to spell it etc, so I just say Amy or Sophie or something, no need to get stressed about it.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 27/07/2015 16:41

Most Starbucks employees pay tax if they earn enough money on their minimum wage job. Being snarky to somebody because you have a beef with the parent company is pathetic.

RepeatAdNauseum · 27/07/2015 16:41

They get around most of the rude puns by only writing your first name. So you'd just be Mike, and that's not half as fun.
