What do I do? Seems like it’s the whole block

Check status online for faults ? It usually comes on again quite quickly.

no1iscoming · 17/09/2021 22:31

Jus go to bed

PumpkinKlNG · 17/09/2021 22:31

Nothing much you can do other than wait it out?

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/09/2021 22:31

Find a torch or light a candle. Don’t open the freezer. Go to bed (blow out any candies first).

Mintjulia · 17/09/2021 22:34

Check you have turned off everything that was on when the power failed - check cookers etc.

Then go to bed. It'll be back on by the morning.

Ours goes off at least once a month. We have electric lanterns in case there is homework to do. Smile

TwooThirty · 17/09/2021 22:35

Check it’s not just your fuse box (but if it’s your whole block then that’s unlikely).
Don’t open the fridge/freezer.
Put your phone on battery saver.
Find a torch/candle (but be safe with the candle).
Look outside and marvel about how cool it is that there’s no light pollution.
Go to bed.

MustDust · 17/09/2021 22:36

Depends what you need to do, what's your situation?

Percyprod · 17/09/2021 22:38

You could notify your supplier, but if whole street is off dno will probably know and send an engineer. Could be fuse in substation or link box, or a cable fault. Used to be my job!

EastWestWhosBest · 17/09/2021 22:40

You light candles and wait. I always know where some candles and a means of lighting them are.

(But then I grew up in the 70s when we would get power cuts in our village that lasted days)

Zeal · 17/09/2021 22:44

Call the police.

LoveFall · 17/09/2021 22:45

Ours went out at 5 am or so a few nights ago due to a tree falling during a strong windstorm. We keep small flashlights (torches) by our bed just in case. Oddly enough, I didn't realize the power was out until I walked into the closet door, not the bathroom door.

We just basically stayed in bed until it came back on at about 8:30 am. No point getting up if no coffee to be had!

Fluffypastelslippers · 17/09/2021 22:46

Report it to the electricity company.

Looktotheright · 17/09/2021 22:51

Save battery on phone/tablet or laptop -don’t MN just in case the cut is quite long. Call 105 or your distribution network - not your electric company.

Gettingusedtothelimelight · 17/09/2021 23:00

@Zeal

What? Why on earth would you call the police?

Floralnomad · 17/09/2021 23:03

Check your postcode on UK power networks and it will tell you if it’s been reported , you can also sign up for text updates , it’s very useful .

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/09/2021 23:07

call the police WTF Zeal

EastWestWhosBest · 17/09/2021 23:12

Last time we had a power cut I had a text from the power company to tell me they knew and when they expected it to be back on.

WetWeekends · 17/09/2021 23:12

Once a month?! Are you in the UK?
vodkaredbullgirl · 17/09/2021 23:16

Mine goes off, if i forget to top up my key.

EastWestWhosBest · 17/09/2021 23:16

We used to get them once a month or so in my last house, town centre UK. My parents live in a small village, they get power cuts when it’s windy.

SmellyOldOwls · 17/09/2021 23:21

You look out the window to see who else's power is off
Wonder where the candles are
Think about how this was how life was in the olden days
Go on your phone a bit to tell everyone
Thinking about doing something atmospheric to enjoy it like reading a ghost story by candlelight
Consider the rest of the weekend stretching ahead of you, electricity free and get excited because clearly this means you'll need to order takeaway food
Spend a bit more time on your phone til it comes back on in 15 minutes

Beefmeupscotty · 17/09/2021 23:22

@Zeal

Call the police.

Surely an emergency cobra meeting is necessary under these circumstances?

But in all seriousness, there's a national grid or something number you can ring to alert them and they'll update you on the cause and how long until its up and running again. We've had to ring before.

womaninatightspot · 17/09/2021 23:22

I would say call 105, if memory serves you get get 25 quid from the power company if it takes more than 24 hours to go back on but you need to notify. We always have an annual power cut and the thought of free money keeps me going as I lug endless wood for the stove so we don't freeze to death.

dryasaboner · 17/09/2021 23:33

Best to log it with 101 tbf

BlackeyedSusan · 18/09/2021 00:00

Me: turn on solar lantern. Use to find way to fridge for the glow in the dark magnet with the power company number and report the power cut.

Plug phone into power bank.

Switch to crocheting granny squares as I can do that by touch/lamplight.
