I'll go first.

When I was 7, I went to a friend's house, and had bright red mashed potatoes for dinner.her dad always put food colouring in food. She thought this was normal, a d everyone had coloured mash.

At a friend's house and it was dessert night.
The whole family were excited about their family dessert.

It was rice pudding with a dollop of jam in the middle.

A portrait of their dog as a centre piece

Dogs meat bowl and baby bottles in the sink together. ’oh I don’t sterilise now she’s six days old’.
Shortly after, I heard the baby was hospitalised with very serious d&v .

Place marking

My mum always used to buy minted peas I loved them
It was a weird day when I went to someone else house to discover peas aren’t naturally minty

DoubleShotEspresso · 14/08/2021 22:19

A glass display case the height and width of the living room, containing Hitler memorabilia.
Was chilling to be offered a cup of tea when I walked in and then taken into the living room to be greeted with such a horrific sight as if this was normal decor.
Disturbing

At a friend's house (back when I was young) they ate crisps with knife and fork.

My grandmother was kind of posh but even her would have eaten them by hand! She used to say that it was good manners to gently pick up the chicken drumstick by hand Grin I used to find that funny, since I did eat the drumstick with knife and fork

Bimblybomeyelash · 14/08/2021 22:20

Rice pudding with jam is a proper British pudding!

00100001 · 14/08/2021 22:21

Oh, and a secondary school friend had a 'ghost' living there...in the kitchen. Apparently it kept opening the drawers and cupboards etc.

Honestly, they would talk about her as if she was a member of the family. I can't recall her name. But let's say it's Doris. They'd talk to Doris, ask her not to leave the drawers open, or to let them make dinner in peace without banging the cupboards Confused

I read a similarly titled thread on Reddit earlier. I’ve a feeling that this is going to be a lot less Shocking!

I know it’s not actually that odd, but going to a friend’s house for tea and it being served as soon as we got in after school. We always had ours at half past six, when my dad got home, I’d never met anyone who ate so early before.

Went to a friends house for dinner when I was 7 or 8, she had lots of younger brothers and when her mum served the dinner a big fuss was made by the mum and brothers about how, as a guest, I was allowed the chicken skin from the roast chicken but no one else was allowed any chicken skin, ever. When the mum left the room one of the brothers leaned over and peeled the chicken skin off my plate and ate it and all the kids acted like it was the biggest treat ever. I’m almost 40 and I still remember how weird it was.

DizzyLollipop82 · 14/08/2021 22:24

I used to go round my friends every other Sunday and all of her family smothered their roast dinner with tomato ketchup. GROSS

countrypunk · 14/08/2021 22:25

My 'best friend' at primary school (she was actually a messed up bully) had a goldfish pond in the living room. I thought it was amazing at the time but looking back it was absolutely gross.

QueenAdreena · 14/08/2021 22:29

Turned up to babysit for a couple of children and was shown around the house by their mum - all quite gothic, lots of black/dark furnishings…and coffins. Coffins everywhere. Some with skeletons. The mum didn’t mention them and I was only 15 at the time so didn’t say a word either! Never went back though.

Sounds like an episode of Father Ted Shock
OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/08/2021 22:34

Not me, but an adult friend went to see the house she’d sold to an older couple(they were friends of her parents). They had big framed photos of themselves everywhere. On holiday. On their NUDIST Holiday.

SilenceOfThePrams · 14/08/2021 22:35

Rice pudding and jam = food of the gods!

My best friend as a child - always had to clear up any game or puzzle or toy. Couldn’t ever leave soldiers storming the castle or push a jigsaw puzzle aside to finish the next day because the cleaner came twice a day to hoover all the floors and polish all the surfaces.

Yes, I did too! Carrot juice dad? And pee in the drawer family? If it's the same thread some were very disturbing.
TenCornMaidens · 14/08/2021 22:38

@Bimbly I also saw the reddit thread and have to say I've also seen terrible things on similar Mumsnet threads. Brace.

What's wrong with that? It's a classic British dessert.
