Does yoga make you a nicer person?

Just feeling a bit grumpy, menopausal(on HRT), grumpy and intolerant these days. I’d love to refind my less grumpy younger self. I do a lot of exercise, weights/ running etc… but feel quite inflexible heavy and slow. But mainly grumpy and intolerant! Even Adrienne annoys me 😆 .I have done yoga in the past.

Any advice?! Thanks 🙏 🧘

It works for me.

I like Charlie Follows over Adrienne. Charlie is English so maybe that’s why

Practising yoga quietly (or maybe loudly with Wetleg blaring) at home feels restorative. And obviously fighting stiffness and aches and pains improves my general well being. And I may actually be in love with my new sunshine yellow Liforme mat …

But I cannot stand online instruction - someone wittering in their faux wholesome/spiritual voice makes me want to throw my device across the room.

And a class? Full of other people? Ha! I would be actually murderous with three minutes.

I love my green garden lifeform mat. Brings me joy!

insomniaclife · 16/07/2025 11:39

People who do yoga certainly think so

MayIDestroyYou · 16/07/2025 11:44

Oh, yes - that’s one of my other favourites! have plans for a green for autumn, maybe a little red dog or phoenix over winter, and bright pink for spring. (Though I’ve realised lately that I will need a travel mat because they’re impossibly heavy. Not too heavy to carry - but there’s a greater likelihood of my putting it down and leaving it behind, or having it stolen if it’s cumbersome. I’m more likely to keep a lighter one about my person whilst on the move. The white and gold looks nice …)

If I spent as much time actually using the one I have as I do pondering seasonal schedules and adding books to my list - I’d be a much better person!

Shavasana · 16/07/2025 11:47

It calms me down and clears my head. It also makes me take time for myself. I sleep better and have fewer headaches. No idea if it makes me a nicer person though!

ChaToilLeam · 16/07/2025 11:52

I like yoga for flexibility but if I am grumpy I'm better going for a long walk. Or I rage clean. I need an outlet for all that bad mood energy.

Adrienne would just make me grumpier because she is so long winded and annoying.

TerrierCollector · 16/07/2025 11:55

It can do if you do all of the supplementary practices like meditation (and even then not necessarily), but for the most part, probably not (I say this as an ex-yoga teacher and Buddhist). I know plenty of people who practice who would like people to think they were super lovely spiritual people, but are actually quite toxic and use it as a veneer!

The most dissatisfied, miserable person i know does yoga for 3 hrs a day, every day. She is very un- yogic.

But imagine what she’d be like if she didn’t?!

SpinandSing · 16/07/2025 15:01

Are you sure that you don't need another type of outlet...like one where you go crazy and wear yourself out? Boxing/HIIT/BodyPump....something that makes you feel strong and magnificent?! Sounds like Yoga might just piss you off more at the moment 😂

declutteringmymind · 16/07/2025 15:11

I can’t comment on yoga, but Pilates really does sort my head out. I didn’t begin it for that but it was a rather unsettling side effect to begin with - I often hadn’t realised how angry and grumpy I was before Pilates until I left afterwards feeling settled. I’m definitely a nicer person for it.
I’ve since looked at somatic exercises, which look a bit woo but I’m tempted.

I also supplement by doing some at home.

Anyway it is worth a try I think.

okydokethen · 16/07/2025 15:20

I think if you love yoga, you’ll be happier to do it more often and consequently calmer.
Find something you like and that gives you time to yourself and see if that helps.

tattychicken · 16/07/2025 16:38

IME, yoga can't work miracles. If you're an arsehole, then you're just an arsehole who does yoga.

Poisonwood · 27/07/2025 09:39

I think yoga (philosophy, breath and movement) can only help grow seeds on healthy soil already in your personality. So if you are generally a compassionate person but have become world-weary, it can help bring your awareness to positives…but if you are a selfish, unpleasant person then nope. Seeds won’t grow on barren soil.

I found daily yoga helped enormously with every aspect of perimenopause, and do feel my inner personality has been able to shine through more via yoga. Loved ones say I seem calmer, as does my nurse.

TaborlinTheGreat · 27/07/2025 09:45

I don't think yoga or any exercise makes any difference to how nice a person I am, but I am a pretty even-tempered person tbh!

I do enjoy yoga more when I do it on my own without a video though. It's much calmer and more focused. Once you know what you're doing, you can just memorise a routine or make up your own. I quite like doing it to music (often slow, chilled-out Indian music with a rhythmic tabla beat).

vincettenoir · 27/07/2025 09:46

I do yoga once or twice a week and I’m not enlightened or anything. I still get irritable and emotional. But it does give me a sense of calm and helps me to respect my body and seek balance so I make better choices.

I do notice that if I miss a week my mental health does suffer for it. I didn’t go much in December and was really feeling chaotic and stressed.

I do pilates too. It's definitely improving my balance and strength, but it doesn't do anything to my head!

shortoedtreecreeper · 27/07/2025 09:48

Some Qigong exercises help your mood.

81Claire81 · 28/08/2025 12:51

I'd definitely say I was both nicer and more productive.

I used to go to yoga classes quite a bit and really liked the atmosphere and having someone there to guide you through. But nowadays I mostly do it at home because it’s just so much easier to fit into my day. I can roll out my mat whenever it suits me and don’t have to worry about getting to a class on time.

I’ve noticed a big difference when I do yoga regularly compared to when I skip sessions. When I keep it up, I feel more relaxed, less stiff, and generally have more energy. But if I miss too many sessions, my body starts feeling tight and I’m just not as calm mentally.

The other week when I was on holiday, I did a yoga class on the beach, and honestly, it was lovely. Doing it with the sound of the waves and fresh air made it feel extra peaceful. It’s a great change from the usual routine and definitely something I’d recommend trying if you get the chance.

Sunshineandswimming · 25/09/2025 20:52

I need a remedy for the midlife rage/intolerance. I wasn't looking in the direction of yoga but more towards some sort of magic "chill pill" or liquid 😉 I'm still looking.
I like the pace of "Yoga with Tim" whoever recommended him up thread - thank you.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 25/09/2025 21:02

I love yoga but I think my zumba and Fitsteps classes make me a nicer person, I can't stop smiling during and after the classes

Yogachick · 27/09/2025 11:14

When I practice consistently I’m definitely a nicer person. I practice mostly with Adriene, though she does annoy me at times so I take a break. After a few days I start to stiffen up & get crankier so back to my mat. Adriene seems to be the only one I can get that clean calm aaaaah feeling,so I’ve got her app & membership to avoid YouTube ads instantly destroying zen.Theres also a lot of membership only stuff on there I enjoy. I’ve tried & enjoyed Sarah Beth, Kassandra, Charlie Follows, Bad Yogi,Brett Larkin at different times, but always come back to Adriene. This reminds me to get back on my mat! It’s been 2 days, bending over to clear the dog poo was creaky & husband is grating for no reason at all, bless him.🙏🕉️
