Alternative pose to downward dog! Ideas?

I've been practicing for many years now and often design my own flows at home.

Have started to notice recently that I get absolutely nothing out of downward dog. I don't experience discomfort, and can do it ok, but simply don't like it very much.

I would love some ideas or alternatives that would replace it in a flow, such as a sun salutation or just on random flows, etc. If I did the 'puppy' pose instead, I can't think how to make it....flow?

I do think downward dog is a bit over used in general, and the repetitive use of it bores me. Any alternatives or ideas? Thanks!

I agree with you completely, it's really put me off a lot of classes that I feel like some teachers spend half the class in down dog. Not my favourite pose.

Depending on my mood, I usually substitute it for plank or child's pose

If you're only using it to move from one pose to another, then how are you staying in it long enough to get bored? A couple of seconds can't be that intolerable, surely...

If you don't want to work on it and what it teaches you, then just don't do it as a pose. Just as a transition between poses that you do think are worth doing

I used to think it was meh but one of my teachers, although the class is called vinyasa, is quite hatha-y really spends the time making it a dynamic and energetic pose, not something you do between movements or lazily.

I find if you are really using effectively all the muscles in your body apart from your neck it totally changes the way you see it

I dislike it as a static pose but do incorporate it as a transition move to get from the floor to standing or vice-versa rather than a held pose in it's own right.

Although if you want a killer core workout try forward fold to downdog to 3 legged dog to 1 legged plank to (what I call) sprinter pose (knee to nose) back to 3 legged dog to downdog. Then repeat on the other leg. And remember to breathe!

If you're not feeling Downward Dog, here are some alternatives that you can incorporate into your flow:
Puppy Pose (Uttana Shishosana): Instead of Downward Dog, you can do Puppy Pose, but to flow, move between this and Child’s Pose for a gentler stretch.
Plank to Cobra: From Plank, lower down to Cobra for a heart-opening stretch that strengthens and stretches the same areas without the downward motion.
Three-Legged Dog (without the downward aspect): Raise one leg at a time for a gentle inversion, without feeling the full Downward Dog pose.
Dolphin Pose: For a deeper stretch in the shoulders and arms, Dolphin Pose works similarly to Downward Dog but focuses on the upper body more.
Wide-Legged Forward Fold: Stand with legs wide, and fold forward with your hands on the floor or blocks. It offers a nice hamstring stretch with a different energy.

I am a longstanding yogi (daily practice) and I've recently been diagnosed with normal tension glaucoma, so cannot do downdog as it raises my eye pressure.

It's hard to find adaptations that give such a thorough stretch of the back and calves, ankles and hamstrings, but I'm doing more Puppy into Child's pose, which seems to be less extreme than down dog, and all the Warrior poses cover the leg stretches..
