Yoga for children

Hi
just interested in your views/feedback.
I’m looking at offering Yoga & Mindfulness to Primary aged children as an After school Club. Is this something you would be interested in for your young children? Charging £5.50-£6.50 for one hour after school. Thanks in advance for any feedback 😊

I don't think any of mine would have been interested enough to persuade me to pay that.

That said, I know it is used in some nurture classes - but that doesn't mean the parents of those pupils would then want to pay for it after school.

RockyRogue1001 · 08/07/2024 23:56

Kind of what @NewName24 said...

I work in 2 primary schools

I think both would be interested if you came and offered this as an ASC. It fits in well with the ethos of both schools.

However, I think parents would bulk at paying this, esp on top of the hire, insurances, etc

Not in UK, our school teachers were qualified yoga teachers so they did yoga as part of their school day.

Huge benefit to the children and the practice was continued in the secondary school.

Best of luck in your venture.

Thank you both for your replies, I know the prices are high but I need to cover cost of hall hire and insurance which is why I’m hesitating. I’m a TA and schools are happy to use me as part of my working day, but I fund my own training and ultimately looking at the possibility of running as a business.

I know our county council issues grants for things like this , have you looked into the possibility of getting some financial support?

Gymmum82 · 09/07/2024 07:28

They used to offer it at my kids primary school but the uptake wasn’t good

spriots · 09/07/2024 07:32

One of my kids would love it - he does a lot of cosmic kids yoga and keeps asking for a class but there isn't one near us

I think a bigger market would be a family yoga session - i.e. an extension of mother and baby yoga so parents (more likely to be mums...) could do it with their primary age children. There's a monthly session like that near us which sells out very quickly

Pricing seems to be standard for a kids activity

One of my businesses runs kids clubs into schools, I have 5 kids yoga teachers all trained both in kids yoga but also for 4 of them in the full adult qualification. It's really hard to get them bookings (currently I only have 3 ASC for yoga for September), comparatively we have a long waiting list for our kids hula hoop, acro and dance clubs (incidentally with dance being on the curriculum this one also is by far the easiest to get day time work in too and it doesn't need to be a classical dance style you've trained in for years). Many adult yoga teachers have struggled for work since the pandemic so they've diversiified into schools work, but it does mean there is a huge supply of yoga and kids yoga teachers now at the same time demand has dipped. We charge the same for all clubs so it's not price, however schools we used to work in 6 or 7 years ago all have a teacher now who has done kids yoga training or they just whack an episode of Cosmic Kids on, yoga unfortunately has been devalued into just a set of movements without the awareness of how it can be tailored to help children with anxiety or overwhelm better process these feelings.

Lurkingandlearning · 09/07/2024 09:41

It’s quite a slow paced activity. Would children that age last an hour

Andyoga4kids · 09/07/2024 12:26

Thank you, interesting regarding the uptake on yoga, I agree, hence my hesitation, the value in yoga for kids as a tool to manage emotions/anxiety is so effective, but it seems its better offered as part of the school day, as oppose to ASC. A shame but I appreciate all of your replies. I don’t think it will work as an ASC for me. But thank you for your feedback 😊

I agree and would love to do this. Thinking about doing teacher training with a view to doing this at some point. Have you done a specialist course? They do exist. My daughter's school does yoga. It's possible but we are in London.

Andyoga4kids · 13/08/2024 06:56

Hi, yes I’ve done a couple of Kids Yoga TT courses. I work as a TA so it ties in well with my work. Good luck with your training.

Just to let you know I have been paying (for years) £11 a session for a Saturday morning class that's an hour. It's always full!

I know the teacher does ASC and summer clubs etc but I get the impression they're funded so she's paid / subsidised by the local authority and then parents have a lower top up charge.

ASC in our area are £4-5 so your price point is high but I think the stuff on Saturdays is generally more expensive so it doesn't seem such a leap.

Can you look into finding or come at it from an LA / school supplier angle rather than direct to parents?

If you want to get in touch with Heather from Karma Kids Yoga (Google) I'm sure she'd love to give you some advice

Andyoga4kids · 13/08/2024 15:55

Thank you, this is encouraging to hear, I am looking at funding, I’ll take a look, thanks again for your positive reply 😊
