Hi,

I'm looking for a 4mm or thicker yoga mat that is pretty, made of premium materials but not super expensive.

I am happy to spend under £100. This looks quite good but the design is a bit dull
https://www.yogi-bare.co.uk/products/yogi-bare-plant-a-tree-mat

This is beautiful but it's made of the cheap material my current yoga mat is.

This is beautiful but oh so expensive. The alignment lines are brilliant too.
https://liforme.com/products/liforme-blue-sky-rainbow-yoga-mat
There are pretty mats by yogabare but I think they are all 2mm thick and I worry that they won't be comfy

The style of yoga I'm buying for is Iyengar, so alignment patterns could help but I'm not expecting to get very sweaty. So needs to grip when dry.

Any recommendations?

Thanks. That looks good, it's about how much I was expecting to spend. I was hoping to get one with patterns but I haven't found one at the price point that also has a nice finish.

Perhaps it's not easy for them to make this and that's why it's expensive!

Also voting for Jade! Really grippy and nice! I have a small travel version, very thin but cheap works on top of carpets of other mats at the yoga studio.

SophieIsHereToday · 11/12/2023 21:13

Do the jade and the movement mats have textured surfaces? @HangingOver@JulieLew @Wednesday6

It looks like the jade does in the pictures. What does it feel like?

I use a Manduka Pro with one of their eQua mat towels if I'm wanting extra grip (I sweat easily).

ArchetypalBusyMum · 11/12/2023 21:22

I got mine from decathlon (their own brand). Really good! Grippy, they do all thickness up to 8mm I think. It has a centre line to help you line up properly. I like a thicker mat personally. I can't link as there are quite a lot of options and I can't be bothered trawling through them for correct one. But it was only about £30 and quality is fab!

ArchetypalBusyMum · 11/12/2023 21:23

Advantage with decathlon is you can go into store and feel them!

JerkintheMerkin · 11/12/2023 21:50

I really like my Pharamond Life one. It has markings to show where to place hands and feet to keep you nice and balanced. The teeth marks from my cat haven't decreased its usefulness Grin

cloudglazer · 11/12/2023 21:57

These are so pretty!
I don't have one, so can't help with texture, but suddenly need a new yoga mat!

They’re grippy as well as pretty highly recommend!

Sooverthemill · 31/12/2023 11:19

I always buy a Liforme mat. They last about 5 years

PamFritters · 31/12/2023 11:24

Liforme without question. They last, are grippy, have the alignment guides. They are exactly what you need. Don’t waste money on anything else!

TrishTrix · 06/01/2024 14:02

Thank you @PamFritters and @Sooverthemill you have just helped me justify my Lifeforme purchase.

New years resolution to try to do yoga daily. Which of course necessitates the purchase of a new mat and blocks!

And google has just turned up the fact that they offer keyworker and military discount which brings the mat in at pretty much my £100 budget!

LunaNorth · 09/04/2024 10:38

I have a Yogabare one and it’s great.

Droolylabradors · 09/04/2024 10:41

Really regret my yogi bare mat, my hands and feet slip all the time. Constantly have to replant.

Wish I'd spent the extra for lifeforme.

TheGreyStork · 14/05/2024 12:41

Of course! When choosing a yoga mat, consider factors like thickness, material, grip, and size. Look for a mat with adequate thickness for cushioning and support, typically around 5mm to 6mm thick. Opt for a non-slip material like PVC or TPE for better grip during poses. Additionally, choose a size that suits your height and practice space. Popular brands like Manduka, Liforme, and Gaiam offer a range of quality mats to consider.

speakout · 16/05/2024 07:12

I prefer a thin mat, too much padding makes my balances more difficult- and one of the classes I attend has a dirty floor. On the odd occasion I need more padding then I use a small blanket or double up my mat.
Plastics like PVC or TPE, contribute massively to microplastics in our environment and oceans, neither of which are biodegradeable.

Cork seems a popular option- I haven't tried one, I have a rubber mat, it is thin, but the grip is like no other mat I have used. It is hard wearing too- no stretching or visible wear even after two years of daily use. My mat has a tree design which I love - and helps me with alignment.

I would also add, make sure you look at the length! I am kicking myself that my mat is too short for me to not have to step off on to the cold floor every now and again.

ArtfulReader · 05/10/2024 18:00

Definitely a Liforme. So worth investing in it, it’ll last you years and I found it really improved my yoga practice. And it’s very pretty too!

Melanieyoga · 11/12/2024 07:14

For your budget and requirements, I'd recommend considering the following:

  1. Gaiam Essentials Premium Yoga Mat - 5mm thickness, offers a good balance of comfort and grip, and comes at a much more affordable price compared to premium brands.
  2. Manduka PROlite Yoga Mat - Slightly over your £100 budget but often on sale. It's durable, thick (4.7mm), and provides excellent grip without being too expensive for its quality.
  3. Yoga Design Lab "The Mat" - It's 4mm thick, stylish, and offers great grip, which is perfect for Iyengar yoga with alignment marks included.
These options offer comfort, style, and decent grip, ideal for Iyengar practice. Keep an eye out for sales or discounts to get a good deal!

I’m having trouble finding a new mat. My old one is dropping to bits but I love it. It is quite thin, matt (not shiny at all), long and has a bit of weight to it. I bought a new one a year ago and I hate it. It is a Yogamatters one - it is too thick, too shiny and slippery, and too short. I think it was described as sticky but it isn’t. My original one was bought from a yoga studio miles away. I don’t want to waste a lot of money to get it wrong again. Can anyone recommend something that sounds like the first one and less like the second one?

Yoga is my passion and I can help with Yoga mats!
Basically only 5 x materials on the market:

I get Teachers discount and wholesale from Yogastudiostore.com so I will put their info here:

Pvc = 80% of mat on the market. Lasts forever, can be slippy: Like these:
www.yogastudiostore.com/collections/best-selling-yoga-mats/products/yoga-studio-designed-sticky-yoga-mat-6mm?variant=55312698081664
Tpe,= prettier and softer than pvc, Lasts for years. allrounder mat:
www.yogastudiostore.com/collections/best-selling-yoga-mats/products/yoga-studio-inter-eco-yoga-mat-5mm?variant=52548462870912
Rubber = grip mats - but dont last. Great for Hot yoga / Grip. But wear. Eco / Ethical:
www.yogastudiostore.com/collections/best-selling-yoga-mats/products/ecoyoga-standard-jute-yoga-mat-4mm?variant=39300137287872
Pu (polyurethane) = grip mats - but dont last. Great for Hot yoga / Grip. But wear. Basically "man made rubber" slightly synthetic, www.yogastudiostore.com/collections/best-selling-yoga-mats/products/yoga-studio-the-grip-yoga-mat-4mm?variant=55730744295808
Microfiber, = grip mat when wet only - lasts for years can be washed. Slightly synthetic:
www.yogastudiostore.com/collections/best-selling-yoga-mats/products/yoga-studio-vegan-suede-microfiber-yoga-mat-4mm?variant=46759972077810
Cork = grip mat when wet / spritz - antimicrobial. Eco, Ethical:
https://www.yogastudiostore.com/collections/best-selling-yoga-mats/products/yoga-studio-cork-yoga-mat-4mm

Simply, If you want a mat to last for "ages" it wont be a grip mat. If you want a grip mat (good for sweat / hot yoga) you will need a Rubber or PU mat all day long.
Hope this help
thanks
Sue
