Hello, a yoga virgin here! I'm desperate to start as I'm stiff, my back is a nightmare and I need exercise. My physiotherapist told me yoga would be the best thing. In addition to this, I always wanted to do yoga but could never work out how to start/ what style to pick/ where to go.

I live in East London and work full time, there are seem to be a lot of classes here but, firstly, very few of them are available out of working hours, and secondly, I have no idea what class would be the best. So I thought I should maybe try online classes so start with? But again, there are so many - free, paid, different styles, etc. I really need some recommendations and help! Any advice is really welcome. Thanks!

Look for a More Yoga studio, they have different styles of yoga each day so you can try them all to see what you like first Smile

I believe with the monthly fee you can go to as many classes as you want

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/11/2023 07:57

1 Hatha yoga is a good starting point.

2 Go to classes in person, until you're in the swing of it.

3 You may need to try different teachers til you find one who suits you.

4 Go to at least 4 to 6 classes to try it out.

Try Mission in E1. It’s supposed to be brilliant.

Yoga with Adrienne on You Tube is a good place to start as a yoga newbie. She does a monthly progressive programme in January- you can either wait for next year or have a hunt for an old one. She is a very easy and welcoming place to begin with.

I really like Kassandra on YouTube - she has a great range of classes and some nice short ones to get you going. I know Adrienne has a huge following but I find her boring.

Thanks everyone! Friend also mentioned More Yoga, so will look into that. ))

Mission is not good for beginners.

smileannie · 23/11/2023 10:13

I go to Blithe yoga and Prana Space, both in Stratford about 5 minutes walk from station/Westfield, very well placed for all public transport. Found them both on class pass.

Goodornot · 23/11/2023 10:15

Triyoga in Shoreditch will have lots of classes. Just choose a class for beginners or an open yoga class.

smileannie · 23/11/2023 10:15

would also recommend yoga on the green which is 5 mins walk from Woodford green station (central line). They have lot of Pilates classes too, both mat and reformer.

DaveWatts · 23/11/2023 10:26

I would get a trial membership to one of the bigger studios and try as many different classes as you can - yoga styles can differ very dramatically and you don't know which you'll get on with until you give it a go. I never understood why everyone was so keen on yoga and always found it incredibly dull until I discovered mysore style ashtanga but I tried a lot of different types before that! A lot of the East London studios like Fierce Grace, Hotpod, The Refinery etc used to be on Classpass too (not sure if they still are) so that might be another way of trying out different places to see if you can find one you like.

If you're not sure where to start, just talk to someone at a studio and see what they recommend for a beginner, as a pp mentioned hatha might be a good one. Some studios (like Triyoga) will also offer specific beginner classes and courses.

Yes. But not sure how suitable for beginners.

Ok I have recs in Clapton and Shoreditch. More Yoga has some good sites too but you might need to drive.
