Yoga or Pilates for lower back pain

Hi, I have suffered on and off with lower back pain for years. It always kind of feels like it’s about to go/snap/stiffen.
I am nearly 50, have under active thyroid I walk a lot but want to improve my flexibility and strength.
Is yoga best or Pilates?

I’d like an app to keep me on track with it.
Any advice?

The NHS does a pilates film for back pain. It really helped me and was recommended by my GP. Might be a good start https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-fitness-studio/chronic-back-pain-pilates-exercise-video/

Thanks for this link 👍

Pilates definitely. I was advised to do Pilates by an NHS physiotherapist for lower back pain - she suggested the Australian variety. I've since joined a class that includes a lot of moves like those I did in physio. See if any local health/wellbeing/older people's organisations run classes for people wanting to improve bone health.

@Ivydivy it really does. Worth having a few sessions 1-2-1 with an instructor to make sure you're doing the moves properly, so that you can get the most from it

Did you get sorted OP? I have a slipped disc injury from about 30 years ago which flares up repeatedly. I've just taken up vinyasa yoga which helps enormously and some of the poses we do are the same as the physio gave me to help my back. Similarly pilates too helps me. I think it's one of those things where it's really a personal choice depron the teacher, the discipline taught and your personal responses.

I go to physio led pilates. The teacher checks and corrects members of the group constantly.
She also tells you exactly how to support yourself during the movements and does a full warm up and cool down each lesson.
It's my favourite hour of the week.
