Strange problem after doing yoga

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I've only just started doing yoga a few times a week for the last month or so but I've noticed that, rather than my joints feeling more supported and stronger, they are actually looser and moving around in ways they shouldn't, which can be painful! My knee joint slipped in a funny way this evening and I keep getting excessive movement in my hip joints that can send an awful pain and tingling all down my leg.
I've had similar problems after having my first dd where my joints were really sore and loose, like they weren't being held in place properly, and ended up with tendosynovitis in my wrists. I'm quite sure that was a hormonal issue though. This time however, it seems to be directly linked to having started yoga, it's very odd! I'm wondering if I should perhaps do some strengthening exercises before doing any more? Maybe my ligaments/tendons are rubbish?! Any advice appreciated.

Hi OP, I am hyper mobile which basically means my joints move too much / hyperextend. When I was younger this was much more of a problem than it is now in my mid forties as I'm naturally losing mobility to a more range with age. I was advised not to do yoga by a rheumatologist at the time (mid twenties) as although it builds strength it also increases flexibility. I have taken up yoga in the last couple years and live it but find it's very important to flex toes and fingers to protect from things like knees, elbows and hips from over extending and keeping knees slightly bent too. I do at home yoga with Adrienne on YouTube and she explains clearly in each pose how to protect your joints but some yoga styles are all about how far you can go which isn't always good! Hope this helps x

Do you do a class or home practice? It's a good idea to try a class if you don't already so you can speak to a teacher about your specific symptoms etc then they can guide you through the important modifications etc as pp said above.

Me and my partner have been doing the Yoga with Adriene. I'm wondering if I might be slightly hypermobile, perhaps I should try pilates instead or some of the more strengthening Adriene ones.

I would recommend going to class with someone who is properly trained, you may be positioning yourself incorrectly.

Same advice I'd give to someone feeling pain or discomfort after doing at home gym style workouts.

Yeah I probably should do. There's one right near me so might give it a go.
