Overweight and inflexible - is it worth trying yoga?

I'm pretty overweight at the minute (size 18 with a big bum and tum) and my flexibility is atrocious. I can't touch my toes by some inches. I would however love to try yoga for the physical and mental benefits that everyone talks about! Also, a new hot yoga studio has just opened nearby which people are raving about.

Is it worth me trying even if I can't do 90% of the class? And what type of yoga do you think would be best to start with?

TIA.

There is definitely NO shame in using props. You should only go as deep/low/far as you can without compromising the pose. And if that happens with a prop, then that is what you should use Smile

Thanks both - another class tomorrow and i'm looking forward to it! Tried to do a bit of practice myself but think that will come more easily when I've done a few more classes. So glad i've started this.

Good to hear, knower. Stick with it and you will be amazed how quickly you will progress. I did a yoga class the other day with a girl less than half my age (who said she was a dancer until 2 years ago, no less). She came up to me after the class and said she was shocked at how little she could do and inspired that I was (relatively) so good at it. I think she was hinting at my age in their somewhere, but I took it as a compliment Grin
