Hi there. Apologies to all as I've borrowed my wifes account to post on this (with her permission of course. I've got my notice in to leave the navy after 12 years service. I'm due to leave end of the year at present. I've applied for a few jobs and have received a job offer for Portsmouth Water. Problem is that I'm currently on £30k pa and this job would be only £22k pa. My wife works part time and is pregnant with our second child due Feb. This job would be locally based working 8 - 5 each day. Second job I have applied for is on a wage much closer to what I'm on now, but involves travelling around the UK midweek, but every weekend off. Concerns are as follows. 1. Due I take this job and accept a large pay cut, which coupled with my wifes loss of income after newborn is nine months old. 2. Do I hold out for other jobs. 2nd job involves travel and has not been offered yet (awaiting 2nd interview and they say they are keen!). This would mean leaving wife and 2 children during the week, something I am leaving the navy to try and avoid. However, lifestyle and finances would still be potentially better. Aplogies for length of post, but any advice would be helpful.

Read www.entitledto.co.uk which will tell you about any tax credits you can get the drop in wages might not be as bad as you think.

Congratulations on your expected 2nd child!

I would take the local job and start looking for promotion / another job once you are 6 months into it, you have 12 years' service in the Navy behind you so your CV will not look uncommitted if you then only stay in your next job for a year.

I would accept the local job. You can always change your mind if you actually get offered the other job. Don't you get a lump sum on leaving the services to help start you off in civvy street?

Oh, I would also take the name of the firm off your post if you can, you never know who might see it (unless that was your sneaky strategy to get a pay increase

Many thanks everyone. I've decided to turn down this job offer today as their top wage was only £24500 after up to five years. Coupled with my wife losing her income after a certain time on maternity leave, this would have crippled us financially. Ironically, I've had 2 phone calls, one for the 2nd interview for 1 job (thats first thing 2morrow), and another interview in 2 weeks for another vacancy - both jobs earning on a par with what I'm on now. Watch this space as I'll see what happens tomorrow.
