I've been invited to apply for a 3 day a week term time only job.

I want to work, I've been at home for a year.

But.

I am a lone parent of 3 under 7, one of whom has mild SN (he has autism). He starts school in September, at exactly the same time as this job starts. He also has a lot of therapies etc. that I would obviously try to juggle, but you can't always choose the days. I just don't know how he is going to react to school - I would hate to let the new employers down by either needing to be called away, or by actually not being able to cope with the job.

ARGH.

I am tying myself up in knots over this - there isn't even a guarantee I'll get it!

It isn't a perfect career path for me, but it is a job, and one that I would probably enjoy.

So, WWYD? Apply and think about if I get the job? Give the children another year? Or the third way, which is to go casual and do ad hoc work in my career sector, which was the plan before this job came along.

How flexible would your days of work be? If they were flexible would it not be possible to juggle your DS's appointments with work days? The opportunity for a part time, term time only job which you think you would enjoy seems a shame to waste in the current economic times if it is at all possible to work it out along with childcare.

I would do it because the worst case scenario is it won't work out and you'll resign and then do ad hoc work in your career sector, which is still fine.

Your DS's appointments should be OK most of the time because 3 days a week termtime leaves a lot of other days available surely?

You never know until you give it a try. There's no point in worrying until it actually happens. If it doesn't work out then you can hand in your notice and no harm done. Three days a week in term time (doing something you enjoy) sounds like an amazing job- if you don't apply please could I???!!!
