Would you take a 25% paycut for something that you really wanted to do?

Apologies in advance, I've posted something similar elsewhere but am just having a bit of a panic and keen to obtain a cross-section of views....

To cut a long story short, I really like my job but my manager and I agreed that I need wider experience and that an external secondment would assist me in this. I applied for a secondment role working in an area which is related to my current role but have been offered a permanent role instead. Its something that I have wanted to do for ages

Accepting this role permanently would mean accepting a 25% pay cut and well as a fairly substantial drop in grade. The interviewers were v positive about my promotion, pay rise and bonus prospects over the next 18 months.

I have to say that it is really the job of my dreams. I am a single parent though and have worked really really hard to get where I am.

I'm interested if you would take a 25% percent paycut in my position and if you have any advice for me please as I'm having a total panic!!

I like both but the secondment opportunity better from a work but not salary perspective.
Your views would be greatly apreciated as I need to revert to them by Monday!

If you really like the work offered, and you can suitably support yourself on the new wage, then go for it. You have to work a lot of hours in a year, might as well make it a lot of fun, interesting hours.

I've answered your other thread as well. I wouldn't take it - it's too much of a drop imo.

Can you afford it?

starrystarrynights · 04/07/2010 11:27

well that the thing - yes I could but it would mean cutting out holidays and no luxuries to pay the school fees. Any thoughts??

When you say that it's a 25% cut, will your net take home be more than 75% of your present take home pay? I mean in theory a 25% cut on your gross salary might leave you with about 82% of what you took home before, not 75% but obviously it depends on tax brackets.
