When can I stop being VAT registered?

Self employed, Vat registered, but do not have to be as not earning enough, and Ltd company.
Want to stop being Ltd company and Vat registered.
Do I have to wait until end of Tax year, and if not, do I just inform accountant that I am no longer Vat reg or Lt company?

I don't think you do - but why don't you ask your accountant? They'll know, surely?

you don't have to wait, but talk to your accountant BEFORE you do anything, there might be a good reason to keep things going for a while that we couldn't possibly know without seeing your figures and knowing more about what you do and the history etc etc

If you're VAT registered and on the flat rate scheme then you'll be better off if you stay registered

Being nosey, what's the 'flat rate scheme' please?

mranchovy · 10/07/2010 00:58

With the flat rate scheme instead of adding up the VAT on all your purchases and expenses to calculate your Input Tax, you are effectively allowed to assume that you have incurred VAT on inputs equal to a percentage of your turnover.

For many small business (particularly non-retail business with no purchases and low overheads) this can mean handing over significantly less VAT to HMRC than they otherwise would.

For more information about this scheme including the rates that apply to various businesses see here.
