Can I give no notice of resignation?

I'm meant to give a weeks (possibly two) notice when I resign, but I'm still on maternity leave, so there is no need to work out my notice IYSWIM. I need my P45 ASAP, so would it be ok to put in my resignation letter that I am resigning, effective immediately (or as soon as possible)?

TIA

I would talk to your employer. Strictly speaking if a person chooses not to give notice there is little the employer can do about it. However it may be reflected in their references. As your employer will not be affected by this they will probably by ok with it.

Thanks for the reply
I've sent the letter off with DH (we worked in the same place) saying that I've resigned effective from next Saturday.
My boss was a friend, so I think she always knew that I wasn't going back, however relationships between the boss and DH have been a bit strained recently, and she was a bit short with me last week, so I didn't fancy pissing her off by saying, 'I'm going right this second! Bye!'

Hopefully, she'll just send off for my P45 today, though she'll probably be busy.

They won't send your P45 off until they've paid you for the last time. SMP included.
