Would you pay £30 a month for accountant to do payroll?

We are a small business, taking on two salaried employees.
Our accountant has offered to do the fortnightly payroll, prepare payslips and year end returns.

Is it worth it?

They will be paid the same each fortnight.
I tend to think the hard work will be setting everything up initially but once this is done I can then do automatic payments for NI and pay and create payslips myself, so think £30 will be steep after the first month?

Just wanted some opinions?

My accountant does my nanny's payroll, which is monthly, plus year end, for £50 a year.

They do my own payroll as well (am technically employed by my own company) plus all the company stuff, tax returns, VAT etc, and my own self-assessment but that's an all-in fee so without finding my break-down I couldn't tell you how much my own payroll costs.

Have a look at these guys - machull who charge around £180 per annum - about half what your accountant is proposing. I've used their nanny service and they were fantastic.

Depends on how much time it usually takes and how much your time is worth. I use a nanny tax company for my nanny, because it would take me too much time, and the payroll company are cheaper than I am.

I do think £30 a month is steep.

I know of someone who does payroll and all related tax stuff for up to fifteen employees for fifteen pounds a month, so thirty sounds a bit steep for only 2 employees.

Everything your accounts is offering for £5.75 a month.

I do the payroll for our three employees. It's really very easy and you get so much guidance if you need it that it's quite hard to go wrong. (Well, if I'm going wrong no-one has said anything about it.) The HMRC CD does it all for you plus there's a helpline for new employers, the website is very comprehensive etc etc. I wouldn't bother paying someone. Running it for three employees takes me a few minutes a week, a few more once a month to send in the NI and tax, and then about an hour once a year to do the annual return. It's really not hard. Maybe it would be more tricky if you're dealing with company cars, maternity leave etc but I don't come across anything like that so can't really comment.

Thanks for your feedback - think I will look at the payrollsite or just do it myself.

I heart mumsnet - you can always find the help you need
