Should I give up a permanant (but unfulfilling) job for a more challenging (but temporary) one?

I have three children aged 9, 5 and 2.5yrs. I currently work part time 8 hours per week, term time. It's very flexible and I can choose my own work pattern to suit and can work from home. However, it is largely unfulfilling, I am getting frustrated and only clear £150 per month after childcare.

I have applied for a job which is 21 hours per week, not term time, and is temporary for a year. It is a job I have been hoping would come up in an area which interests me and it would be more challenging - and I need a challenge! I'm well qualified for the job and think I stand a good chance of getting it. I would clear around £750 per month after childcare.

So, advice needed, am I mad to consider giving up a permanent, family friendly job in the current economic climate for a more challenging one which might only last for a year?

The new job is also in a family friendly environment but is not term time. There is a chance it could be made permanent after a year, but no guarantees.

What should I do? Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks.

Even if it only lasts a year its 5 years at your current salary so as long as it doesn't take you 4 years to find another should it end your quids in.

Would it be possible to do both? Then if the new job doesn't last you still have a fall back.

Think Kammy's suggestion is worth thinking about as it would still be part-time. Even if you only did both for a few months it would give you time to compare.
