I've got a phone interview - eek - how will it differ from a face -to-face (aside from being able to do it in my PJ's..)

I'm returning to work after a year off having resigned from my pre-mat-leave role. I've been offered a phone interview for a role that I'd really like to do.

Does anyone have any experience or advice? I've never done a phoner before so not sure if it'll be massively in-depth or just a quick screening call. I've not actually had any kind of interview for over eight years so I'm feeling a bit apprehensive..

thanks

I conduct phone interviews for overseas jobs, and they're usually shorter than face-to-face, but otherwise much the same.

They'll ask the usual questions about your experience, skills, why you think you're right for the role, etc.

Do make sure you ask some questions - people who don't always sound as if they're not really interested in the job, or that they've not understood what the job is about.

Thanks, ashcloud. I guess I'll have the advantage of having some notes to hand.

I would still dress smartly rather than be in my pjs....it'll help you have a positive professional attitude.

Wear suit, stand up when on the phone, and wear lipstick. I kid you not, apparently you (one...) immediately sound more professional.......

Remember to make use of silence and to speak at a measured pace. If you pause for a second or two, it will feel like an age to you, but will not feel so long to the listener. And remember, you will have to work harder to establish a "human" connection with a person whom you can't see, so injecting a good bit of warmth into what you say and looking for humour along the way can be helpful.

DO NOT DO IT WITH KIDS ANYWHERE AROUND!!!

i have been interviewed while sorting out dd after she had wet her pants all the way down the stairs.

i like to think the interviewer had no idea what was happenine

Definitely agree with the stand up advice, it really does make you feel more confident.

Good luck!

great advice, thanks everyone. Glad I asked you and didn't listen to DP who said "why don't you just sit on the toilet so you're comfortable?"
