Seen my dream job - but...

it's in London (I'm not), it's full time, I want a part time job...

So is it worth applying? It's quite an unusual mix of criteria they're asking for and I just feel it's too good an opportunity to ignore but could it realistically ever work?

Anyone ever negotiated remote, flexible working with some degree of success?

I would be happy to travel to London and work there occassionally but not every day of every week.

You need to send your CV without your address just your mobile number on. Then when/if they show an interest be upfront about your circumstance.
Many larger companies or comapnies in 'new' industries (Media, Digtal, mobile phones etc) will be very flexible with home working etc. It will depend a lot on your seniority and experience as well.

May help to know a bit about what the role is..

foureleven · 15/06/2010 20:53

Also, I dont know your personal circumstance but personally I wouldnt pass up my dream job just because it was full time.. life is short, go for it.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 15/06/2010 20:55

I dunno. It may be the dream job for you (although not quite, considering location and that it's FT) but they may have lots of other candidates with a similar mix of what's required and have plenty to choose from. You could give it a try for a confidence boost but may be getting in too much hassle when you don't need it.

foureleven · 15/06/2010 20:59

No no, nothings too much hassle for your dream surely!

OP tell me what is, I know quite a bit about employment I could tell you if its likely to be something that lots of people will aply for and could do etc

CristinaTheAstonishing · 15/06/2010 21:06

I just thought taht she could go for it, be offered the job, then have the dilemma of accepting it or not, negotiating conditions etc etc. A pain you could have avoided.

Innat · 15/06/2010 21:29

thanks for your thoughts so far. the job info is here:
jobs.wellcome.ac.uk/iRecruit/VacancyDetail.aspx?VacancyUID=000000001758

so not a new industry but possibly a new role - an expanding sector anyway.

Cristina, I know hat you're saying re lots of choice, i know job adverts re getting tons of applicants and this has been very widely advertised (guardian etc).

Hi innat, well IMO there will be heaps of people apply for this because it is a topical sector. But hardly anyone will actually have those skills and that experience so I think if you do you will have a good chance of getting somewhere with it. Its a global company and there will be international travel involved so with that comes flexibility usually. i.e. youre flexible for them and they are flexible in return... but it certainly doesnt look like a 'school hours only' or even a 9-5.

It looks like bloody hard work TBH.

But like I said, if its your dream its acheivable. Ive achived things I never thought possible in my career since having my DD. Go for it!

I know someone who works in something not dissimilar, and I guess they might be happy for you to be there just 2 or 3 days a week. It is just down the road from Kings Cross / St Pancras / Euston, so good for train commuters. I agree that not many people will have all that experience, so if you do, I'd go for it.

Innat · 16/06/2010 18:48

Thanks for your comments. i do have everything they ask for!! i do also think they will get lots of applications like you say.

grendelsmum i was sort of thinking along the same lines or maybe one week in london, one week at home to cut down on train costs.

foureleven thanks so much for your positivity. I was feeling quite negative about it today but you're now making me think I should apply anyway and see how far I get. I just don't want to waste people's time by applying and then not being able to do the job (logistically!).

my friend has but she got headhunted for the post. she works from home 3 weeks out of 4 and spends three days in the office, which is a 4hr drive from home. She stays over with friends for the 3nights she's away.
