how long to train as a librarian?

Hi,
I taught in a primary school for about 12 years and then worked as a Maths Consultant. Ive had a few years off since having my children but next year my youngest will start school and I need to think about going back to work.

I dread the thought of going back into education, I disagree so strongly with what is happening in schools at the moment that I would find it too stressful.

I finally want to do something I enjoy, and as I love being around books (bookshops, libraries) I wondered if I might try a change of career...

How long would it take to train?
Any idea what the salary is like?
any advice appreciated
thankyou

I would find out first if you can get a job as a librarian? Councils are cutting costs and library assistants are cheaper so getting rid of Librarians has happend and you may not fidn it that eay to get a job in that field without relocating when your are qualifid - sorry

Maybe get a job as a library assistant first and see if you like the atmosphere?

When I qualified as a Chartered Librarian (30 years ago) it took 6 years - 3 years of a degree course, 1 year post-graduate experience, 1 year at library school and 1 year post-library school experience. I don't work as a librarian now, mainly because, as ruckyrunt said, many councils are cutting back and using unqualified staff (rather like using TA's instead of teachers in schools) The professional body is CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals) - you can find some careers advice on their website

I know it is possible to do a 1 year post-grad course these days (I think it depends on level / subject of first degree.
